On-screen rant interviews Vance and Goodwin about what attracted them to the series, their favorite Ryan Murphy series, and what to expect from their characters on the show. Grotesque Season 1.
Vance and Goodwin always welcome the opportunity to work with Ryan Murphy
“That’s it. Here’s why. He’s that person. He called us and we said yes.”
What attracted you each to the show and made you want to become actors? And, Courtney, you’re also an executive producer.
Courtney B. Vance: Ryan Murphy.
Raven Goodwin: Ryan Murphy.
Courtney B. Vance: That’s it. Here’s why. He’s a man. He called us and we said yes. If you get the chance to work with him… On the stage, when I first started, if you got a call from Lloyd Richards asking you to do an August Wilson play, you knew you were going to Broadway, and it was the same thing. something like this. Ryan Murphy studies alone.
Raven Goodwin: Yes, indeed. And then Niecy called me and said, “Hey, I feel like you could play my baby.” She definitely reached out and made sure I was okay.
Is there a particular Ryan Murphy show that really stood out to you and made you think, “I need to be in this project that he’s doing”?
Raven Goodwin: American Horror Story. One hundred percent. I’ve always followed the show, so it made sense to me.
Courtney B. Vance: I’m a thriller fan, but not a horror fan. So I would say OJ did it for me. It became an event and passed in much the same way as it would become an event.
Ryan Murphy Asks Travis Kelce to Join the Cast of ‘Grotask’
“Ryan called him and Travis said, ‘Well, Ryan, if that’s what you think.’
This is Travis Kelce’s first series regular role. Courtney, how did he end up on the show?
Courtney B. Vance: Ryan Murphy. Ryan called him and Travis said, “Well, Ryan, if you think so.” He is such a sweet, humble and kind person. And so when I first met him, and of course he plays for the Chiefs and I play for the Lions, so…
Raven Goodwin: Courtney was going through a difficult time in his life when he met Travis.
Courtney B. Vance: But we got through it.
Can you give a brief description of your character and how he plays into the overall mystery of this season?
Raven Goodwin: Merritt is Marshall and Lois’ daughter, and she’s obviously an adult, but she’s definitely inherited trauma and pain from her parents, and she’s just trying to figure out her own stuff, but she’s doing it in a childish and almost sick way. We are a house full of vices that take over our lives. Food, alcohol, and then he ends up in the hospital. It’s like a family going through a strange phase.
Courtney B. Vance: And, of course, she is who she is because of who we are. If we were better, she would be better. I think families can identify with this. Everyone has something they’re dealing with, so we’re definitely confused.
Raven Goodwin: We let it consume us. It’s like we want it to consume us.
Courtney B. Vance: Pray for us.
