Spoiler alert for Ghosts season 4, episode 3, ‘Halloween 4: The Witch’
Ghosts Season 4 continues with Halloween shenanigans that keep the entire gang on their toes. Patience (Mary Holland), a Puritan ghost from the 1600s, is living with Sam (Rose McIver), Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) and all the ghosts of the Woodstone B&B after she finds her way home through the land in Ghosts season 3 finale. Patience’s presence in the house makes things scarier, as Ghosts Season 4, Episode 2 revealed that her ghost power is making the walls bleed. The ghost brings a horror element to the paranormal comedy series, just in time for spooky season.
Patience appeared in Ghosts season 4 premiere after a brief introduction in season 3 when she pulled Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) through the wall. The Puritan ghost had some unfinished business with the Revolutionary War soldier, who accidentally banished her to earth with an ill-timed sneeze that caused him to let go of her hand when they were underground. Although Patience and Isaac have reconciled, the godly ghost is still settling in and some concepts are new to her. Patience’s adverse reaction to Halloween sparks more mischief and provides another big Ghosts Halloween episode.

Patience believes Sam is a witch because of Halloween
Patience has a history of making witch accusations
It doesn’t take much to convince Patience that the devil is lurking around every corner. Still, the sheltered ghost finds plenty of reason to believe Sam is a witch in episode 4. Sam, who loves Halloween and has spent three seasons celebrating it with the ghosts, enters the room with a motion-activated Jack-O-Lantern . When Patience sees his eyes light up and hears him make an automatic, haunted laugh, she accuses Sam of witchcraft.
The Puritan’s accusation makes sense in the context of Patience’s accusation. Ghosts season 4 story. In 1692, Patience was banished from her religious community for being “very severe.” The decision came after she accused a five-year-old girl of being a witch because she saw her talking to her doll. His accusations make sense, considering Patience’s background and naivety in the modern world. That doesn’t help the other ghosts mention Sam’s annual Halloween partywhere she brings other ghosts back from the dead.

Jay recalls Woodstone B&B’s hard-luck Halloween story
This wasn’t the ghosts’ first Halloween episode
When Jay realizes that Sam’s zeal for Halloween may inspire another upset from Patience, he recalls their history of bad luck on the holiday. Jay remembers the B&B owners’ new gazebo catching fire in season 1, Sam “almost dying” in season 2, and Pete’s widow Carol dying at the estate in season 3. Although Sam loves the holiday and wants to make the most of it, it tends to bring out some of the more eccentric antics in the Ghosts characters who died in Woodstone.

Patience convinces the other ghosts to put Sam through a witch trial
The Puritan ghost is superstitious
Convinced that she is a witch, Patience asks the other ghosts to put Sam through a witch trial.. Patience makes some convincing arguments about why she believes the owner of the house is a witch, namely Sam’s ability to summon the dead and speak to ghosts. She also cites Sam’s ability to predict the weather as proof. Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) points out that Sam achieves this with a weather app on his phone, noting that some of Patience’s arguments are stronger than others.
After Sam cancels Halloween, Isaac and the rest of the ghosts agree to the witch trial since everyone is looking for something to do. When the spirits tell Sam what they are doing, she rebukes Patience, saying: “Women should stand up.” Patience’s mind immediately associates the comment with levitation, further convincing her of Sam’s transgressions. Sam refuses to participate in the trialso the ghosts decide to try her out in absentia, and that doesn’t go well with the owner of the house.
The witch trials continue Patience’s tendency to impose her beliefs on those around her, as happened to Sam’s father in episode 2.
Patience makes some convincing arguments, and the ghosts get mad at Sam for canceling Halloween and other random things, so they convict her of witchcraft. Every ghost votes that Sam is guiltyexcept Alberta (Danielle Pinnock). Believing the trial is over, the ghosts laugh, but the Puritan continues gravely. Patience condemns Sam to “petrification,” noting that Sam’s flesh and bones will turn to stone. The witch trial continues Patience’s tendency to impose her beliefs on those around her, as she did on Sam’s father (Dean Norris) in Ghosts Season 4, Episode 2.

Isaac, positioning himself as Patience’s friend, says he doesn’t usually watch television, but notes that he is particularly “good episode.”

Patience, intrigued by the idea and getting sucked into the programming, meanders over to the couch and sits with Isaac. Isaac, afraid of Patience and having been scolded by her, uses his political knowledge to get on the Puritan’s good side. A side effect of the alliance is that Isaac and Patience grow closer.

Jay sacrifices his Dungeons & Dragons Quasit to retrieve Sam’s statue
Jay makes a valuable trade for Sam’s statue
With the help of the ghosts and Trevor’s ability to communicate using the iPad, the ghosts share Sam’s location with Jay. The person who bought Sam’s statue is a content creator who makes videos of himself blowing things up with dynamite. The ghosts send Jay a teaser in which the creator stands next to the statue of Sam he bought in Woodstone and says he’s going to blow it up that afternoon.
Luckily, Jay recognizes the location because it’s near one of the Sonic restaurants he frequents. It locates “Captain Kaboom” and begs for the statue back. Ultimately, Captain Kaboom agrees to return the statue to Jay if he trades in his Dungeons & Dragons quasit, a figurine inspired by Jay’s fantasy role-playing hobby that accidentally went up for sale at the garage sale. Jay reluctantly agrees to the trade and brings Sam’s statue home safelyfor relief from ghosts.

Jay accidentally breaks Sam’s statue after the flower passes by
Jay makes a fatal mistake (but it’s okay)
Overjoyed that Jay returned Sam to Woodstone, Flower (Sheila Carrasco) tries to hug Jay, but an unfortunate side effect that Flower has in “the living” when she passes them is when they get uncontrollably high. Unaware of your surroundings, Jay runs to Sam’s statue and knocks him down, breaking his head. As Jay falls to his knees and screams his wife’s name, Sam appears, asking what all the fuss is about.
Sam explains that she was helping Mrs. Farnsby move a table she bought at the garage sale, putting it in a room that Sam didn’t want to talk about, based on the lore that the Farnsbys are swingers. Sam’s reappearance is the perfect twist for the Halloween episode. “Halloween 4: The Witch” offers a paranormal scare with minimal consequences (other than Jay losing a quasit). Ultimately, Patience realizes that her ghost powers do not extend to petrificationbut the other spirits agree that his ability to make walls bleed is quite frightening.

Patience decides to return to Earth (but she wants companions)
Patience returns to earth, but it doesn’t go alone
Just before Sam appears as herself, the ghosts beg Patience to reverse her sentence. Patience reminds them that Sam is a sinner and that nothing can be done to save her. Isaac, who has been strategizing communication with Patience since her character’s debut, reminds her that she also turned away from the light when she watched TV with him. He reminds Patience of how she danced to a diabetes medicine commercial, which harkens back to Purtian’s idea of letting loose.
…Patience reveals that she is returning to “the others” as she leaves, leaving episode 3 with the question: Who else does Patience have in the dirt…
Ashamed of having strayed from her values, Patience announces that she plans to return to Earth. The other ghosts are supportive, as Patience has complicated life at Woodstone during her limited time there. Even Sam is supportive of the idea, usually willing to face a ghost in need of help. However, Patience reveals that she is returning to “the others” as she leaves, leaving episode 3 on the question: Who else does Patience have in the dirt and who will be missing?
