9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear confirmed a stealth 9-1-1: Lone Star cameo in season 8 of the main series, explaining the process behind the surprise appearance. During 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 2, Athena (Angela Bassett) has a flashback involving the day of her fiancé Emmett’s (Jeff Pierre) funeral, which included a dispatcher making one last call during the sad event. The voice of said dispatcher belonged to none other than Gina Torres, who plays Captain Timmy Vega in 9-1-1: Lone Star. The cameo more easily connects the two series to one another at the end of their runs.
Talking to TV LineMinear revealed he wanted Torres to voice the funeral dispatcher in 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 2 because of her talent with voice acting work. Mentioning his voice work at Disney World Mission: SPACE at EPCOT, the creator said that while it wasn’t always planned for her voice to be the one they used, it was ultimately decided that she was the best fit for the emotional moment. Check out what Minear has to say below:
I called Gina [Torres] and just said, ‘Hey, can you do a little narration for me?’ I needed a great voice, and she has the best voice. She’s even the voice on a Disney World ride, if I’m not mistaken – and I’m not… I’m always looking for reasons to hire Gina Torres.”
What Gina Torres’ cameo means for 9-1-1 and Lone Star
A subtle nod towards the procedural spinoff
While it’s unclear whether canon dictates that Tommy was actually the one who spoke at Emmett’s funeral, it would help tie the two series together more closely as the spinoff comes to an end.
Torres’ cameo makes sense given his working relationship with Minear, who also co-wrote the episode with Ted Griffin. The actor and series co-creator worked together for the first time in Fireflywhere she played Zoe Washburne, with the pair later reuniting during her small role as Jasmine in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin off Angel. She has been an important character in 9-1-1: Lone Star since season 2, but also has a lot of voice acting experience, including Airachnid in Prime Transformers and Vixen in Justice League Unlimited. These factors made her perfect for the voice during Athena’s flashbacks.
Given his role already in the spinoff, this cameo acts as a nice nod to the series, especially potent because 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 will be its last season. This is also just the first reference to this season’s spinoff, with 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 5, offering a brief nod to Firehouse 126. While it’s unclear whether canon dictates that Tommy was actually the one who spoke at Emmett’s funeral, it would help tie the two series more closely together as the spinoff comes to an end.
Our Take on Gina Torres’ 9-1-1 Voice Cameo
A conscious nod to his starting streak
Torres’ cameo isn’t just a tribute to his role in 9-1-1: Lone Starbut it also maintains some additional emotional resonance because the spinoff is set to end soon. Season 5 is set to end on December 16, 2024, effectively ending the show and ending its characters’ stories for good. Although this does not mean 9-1-1 won’t see some surprise cameos in the future, especially now that Torres’ appearance has opened the door, it will likely be small cameos like hers. However, it’s still a thoughtful nod to the final series of partners.
