8 things that need to happen when the Apple TV+ show returns

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Shrinking Season 2.

Shrinking Season 2 ends on a satisfying note, but there's still a lot to explore in Season 3. Jimmy (Jason Segel) continues to mourn the death of his wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden), in Season 2, which becomes more complicated when Brett Goldstein Shrinking character, Louis, is revealed to be the drunk driver involved in his fatal accident. Put Shrinking season 2 finale, both Jimmy and Louis reach their lowest point, but still find a way to reconcile and help each other.

While much of Season 2's conflict revolves around Jimmy and Louis, the rest ShrinkingThe cast of characters also has its fair share of challenges, and the cast expands with many familiar faces from other comedies. Paul's (Harrison Ford) Parkinson's disease symptoms become more severe, Liz (Christa Miller) finds her purpose, and Gaby (Jessica Williams) navigates a relationship with Derrick (Damon Wayans Jr.) with Shrinking Season 3 confirmed, there are several storylines and outcomes that need to play out in the Apple TV+ series.

Cobie Smulders Returns in Ever-Dwindling Third Season

She reunites with her How I Met Your Mother co-star in Season 2 of Shrinking

Shrinking season 2 presents an unexpected how I Met Your Mother reunion with Cobie Smulders debut. She plays a character called Sofi, with Jimmy buying her a car for his daughter Alice's (Lukita Maxwell) birthday. Unlike your how I Met Your Mother characters, who were strictly platonic friends, there are romantic sparks between Jimmy and Sofi. There is an immediate chemistry between them, where they joke around with each other but are also able to discuss deeper, more personal issues.

Now that Jimmy is in a better place after resolving his issues with Alice and Louis, Smulders is expected to return for season three where Jimmy and Sofi can start dating. Sofi will never replace Tia and she and Jimmy don't need to end up together, but it would be nice to see more of their chemistry, to see Jimmy open up to romantic love again, and at least how I Met Your Mother meeting to continue. Jimmy dating again could also present new challenges in his relationship with Alice, who may have difficulty seeing her father with a new woman.

Paul doesn't die

The second season seemed to be setting up its demise

With Paul's condition in Shrinking Getting more serious, the Apple TV+ series appears to be gradually building up until he dies in the third season. His neurologist, Dr. Sykes (Amy Rosoff), explained that he is taking the maximum dosage of medication he can safely take, and his symptoms are increasing. The series begins with Jimmy struggling after Tia's sudden death, and may end with Jimmy in a better place as he now mourns the death of his mentor and friend.

Shrinking has always walked the fine line between drama and comedy and has not been afraid to explore real, difficult issues. However, Paul's death may veer too far into territory that would destabilize this tonal balance. The series can show how someone with Parkinson's disease can still live a full life while managing difficult symptoms. With Paul potentially having to step away from his career and rely more on others, there is enough conflict and love in his life to focus on without having to rely on the drama of his death.

Louis returns and becomes friends with increasingly minor characters

He hasn't met many of the main characters yet

Even if the conflict with Jimmy and Louis is resolved, Louis must still return Shrinking Season 3, and should become friends with more characters. As of now, he is only friends with Alice and Brian (Michael Urie) and it looks like he and Jimmy will be friends too. Gaby, Sean (Luke Tennie), Liz, Derek and other prominent characters were supposed to meet Louis and become friends with him toowith each of them having their own unique dynamic with Louis.

Given the dark place Louis finds himself in before Jimmy reaches him at the train station, Louis still has a lot to work out. Having more community can help him continue this personal work and ensure he never feels so alone and hopeless again. Goldstein had a phenomenal performance in Season 2. It would be wonderful to see him promoted to series regular, just as the actor who played Derek went from guest star to series regular in Season 2.

Gaby and Derrick's relationship becomes more serious

Their relationship hit some bumps in season two

Gaby and Derrick have excellent chemistry and seem to be a perfect fit for each other. Unfortunately, Other characters' personal crises and Gaby's self-sabotage continue to get in the way of their promising relationship getting more serious. Now that Gaby is working through the issues that contributed to the self-sabotage, and with her and Derrick reconciling at the end of Season 2, they can take their relationship to the next level in Season 3.

Gaby is a caregiver who is often focused on caring for others, but her relationship with Derrick can help ensure that she remembers to meet her own needs. Derrick met Gaby's mother and sister and got to know her friends well in Season 2. While Derrick brought his aunt to Gaby's Thanksgiving dinner, it would be nice to see more of Derrick's family in Season 3 and continue to delve deeper into Gaby's family and personal lives. There should be more Tia flashbacks

There's still more to learn about her

Shrinking Season 2 Episode 8 features flashbacks with Tia before her death, with these flashbacks showing her friendships with Gaby and Brian. This is the first time in the series that there is a flashback to Tia not shown through Jimmy or Alice's eyes. Although Jimmy and Alice are obviously the most affected by her death, It is important to show who Tia was besides being a wife and motherthat the flashbacks in episode 8 of season 2 achieved.

More Tia flashbacks in season three could continue to develop her character and ensure that she is more than an ongoing plot device for Jimmy and Alice's pain.

It has already been mentioned before how Gaby and Tia were best friends and how Brian also adored her, but it is more effective to show rather than tell this information. More Tia flashbacks in season three could continue to develop her character and ensure that she is more than an ongoing plot device for Jimmy and Alice's pain. The flashbacks don't have to be extensive, but they are an element that the series should continue to explore in season 3.

Alice goes to college

This could bring a satisfying conclusion to Alice's story

Keeping in mind ShrinkingIn Alice's three-season plan, Alice going to college could be a satisfying end to her story. Alice has always been mature for her age and has become increasingly independentincluding how she is able to forgive Louis. With Alice dating, driving her own car, and progressing through high school, one of the next important steps for her will be graduating and going to college. This will be another emotional turning point in his life and in his relationship with his father.

Based on the therapy she received from Paul, the personal progress she made with Jimmy, and how she reaccustomed herself to social life among her peers, Alice is now in a much better position than she used to be. It will be a bittersweet but also proud moment to see her moving into the next chapter of her life. She is better equipped to deal with future challenges due to the support of her loved ones, who will continue to cheer and support her as she grows older.

2

Brian loves being a dad, despite the challenges

He will need to learn that not everything can go his way

In addition to Brian helping Louis, much of Brian's story in Season 2 was about him becoming a father alongside his wife, Charlie (Devin Kawaoka). At the end of the season, Brian is deeply committed to becoming a father and is thrilled to adopt a baby, despite the understandable fears and insecurities he still has. With Liz looking after the baby two days a week, another nanny looking after the other three's babies, and all their friends willing to help, Brian and Charlie have a strong support network.

We hope Brian loves being a father, despite the challenges it will bring. "Everything goes my way" is Brian's mantra, and he will quickly learn that as a father, things often don't go the way he wants and he will often feel like they are out of control. If Brian can still love his son even when things don't go his wayand even with the insecurities he's had since his own upbringing, this could be a satisfying culmination in his character development over the three seasons.

Jimmy finds peace

Jimmy needs to find something besides helping his patients

Losing the love of his life isn't something Jimmy will ever get over, but he can still find inner peace before Shrinking ends. Jimmy still needs to discover what peace looks like for himas he thought he found helping his patients in unorthodox ways, but season two proved that these victories are just a temporary remedy for a much deeper wound. It could be finding romantic love again, with Sofi possibly being a partner with whom Jimmy can build a future in the coming episodes.

If Jimmy manages to find peace, it will likely not be one thing, but a combination of personal and professional factors. What happens to Paul and his Parkinson's disease, what happens to Jimmy's patient, and everything that happens to Alice will have a significant impact on Jimmy's season three story. While Shrinking it's an ensemble series, Jimmy is the main character and the face of the series, and there needs to be a satisfying resolution to his ongoing struggles.
