A film from Monstroverse found new success in streaming after switching platforms. The Hollywood franchise mixes characters and settings from two of the most famous and longest-running monster franchises in history. The first is Godzillaa Japanese Kaiju franchise that follows the various attacks of a giant irradiated lizard that began in 1954 and now includes over 30 films, and the second is King Kongan American franchise that began in 1933 and follows an enormous ape whose rage is often triggered when he is being exploited by humans.
The Monsterverse, produced by Legendary Pictures, features King Kong, Godzilla and a variety of others Kaiju of Godzilla films including Mothra, King Ghidorah and Rodan in the same universe. Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire has become the latest Monsterverse film to find success on streaming. The film is the most recent, having premiered in March 2024. The film directed by Adam Wingard, which is a direct sequel to the 2021 crossover Godzilla vs. Konggrossed US$571.8 million against its approximately US$150 million budget, making it the seventh highest-grossing film of the year worldwide at the time of writing. He follows a group of humans involved in a battle that takes place in the Hollow Earth between Kong (helped by Godzilla) and the monkey despot Skar King.
Now, Godzilla vs. Kong is finding additional streaming success in Netflix in the United States after migrating to the Max streaming platform, a platform operated by the franchise's distributor, Warner Bros. At the time of writing, The New Empire is number 3 on Netflix's daily top 10 chart of his most watched films. It was second only to the highly successful Netflix original thriller Continue First and foremost is Tyler Perry's epic war drama The six triple eightwhich is also a Netflix original.
