Although most of the cast remained until the end of the series, several actors, such as Harry Morgan, left the series. MASH for 11 seasons. MASH was the second adaptation of the novel after Robert Altman’s film, which chronicled the experiences of a medical unit during the Korean War. MASH started out as a comedy that nevertheless took its central theme seriously, and although the showrunners were forced to include laughter, they were able to exclude it from the surgery scenes. In later seasons, it evolved from a sitcom to a drama, with some episodes being virtually laugh-free.
The series ended up lasting eight years longer than the Korean War itself. MES The finale became the most-watched scripted television series of all time. MES The unique combination of laughter and drama has never been attempted before and will influence future shows such as Scrubs. Considering that it lasted 11 years, this is not surprising. MASH actors left the show during its runsometimes to avoid type casting or to simply move on to other projects.

It’s interesting that Morgan doesn’t even have any lines as Father Mulcahy in MES pilot and is primarily used for comedic reaction shots. Morgan appears to have been replaced because executive producer Larry Gelbart felt the character was not popular.. He once stated (via MASH4077TV) What “George Morgan is a wonderful actor. We needed someone with a quirkier personality that we wouldn’t have to write into the script.“
William Christopher replaced Morgan in the role and appeared on MASH for the entire mileage; he was also one of the few actors to return to AfterMASH. Unfortunately, Morgan didn’t have many other accomplishments after his career. MASH exit, his last credit was the 1990 film. Have a nice night.

McLean Stevenson
Colonel Henry Blake – remained in season three
McLean Stevenson’s departure was not only a turning point in the series, but also his MASH The death was also a revolutionary television moment. Stevenson played Colonel Henry Blake, commander of the 4077th Regiment. MES first three seasons. Blake had a fairly laid back approach to running 4077, often allowing Alan Alda’s Hawkeye Pierce and Wayne Rogers’ Trapper to get away with their shenanigans. Blake was especially close to Radar (Gary Berghoff), who almost never left his side and seemed to psychically sense when Blake needed him.

He decided to leave and was written into the Season 3 finale “Abyssinia, Henry”, where Blake receives an honorable discharge and leaves camp. To the shock MES The main characters – and the watching audience – later Radar informs everyone that Blake’s plane was shot down, killing everyone on board.
While it’s not unusual now for a major show to kill off a main character, back when the episode aired in 1975, such a move was unheard of. Killing off the supporting characters that audiences had come to know and love was a bold move that paid off in terms of ratings. It was also a controversial choice, with some angry viewers writing letters to CBS, and the network even cutting the episode’s ending from a later rerun. Without knowing it, “Abyssinia, Henry” was to be the last episode for another major actor.

Wayne Rogers
Trapper John – stayed after season 3
Just like MASH In film, the first three seasons were something of a two-hander between Hawkeye’s characters and Wayne Rogers’ John the Trapper. Rogers actually turned down an audition for Hawkeye in favor of Trapper, as he found the character’s less cynical nature more appealing. Rogers joined MASH With the understanding that Hawkeye and Trapper were equal leads, as Alda’s popularity among audiences grew, the writers began to focus more and more on Hawkeye.
Rogers was tired of feeling sidelined and that Trapper had become Hawkeye’s assistant, so he decided to leave.. MES the producers were deeply unhappy with his decision and threatened to sue. However, it soon became clear that Rogers had never actually signed his original contract as he objected to the “moral clause” contained in it. This meant that the producers had nothing to do and Rogers could leave.

Larry Linville
Frank Byrne – left after season 5
Larry Linville inherited the role of Major Frank Burns from Robert Duvall, who played the role in the 1970 film. It was no easy task, but Linville became an unforgettably disgusting villain. MES adaptation for the small screen. Burns is a judgmental, self-centered, and selfish individual who was despised by many in 4077. He also strictly followed the rules, which meant that he naturally hated Hawkeye and Trapper. The only person who really liked Frank was Margaret (Loretta Swit), they had an ongoing affair, despite Burns being married.
MES The season six premiere explains that Frank was sent back to the States for psychiatric evaluation after a drunken night in Seoul.
Linville decided to leave MASH after five seasons he got bored of playing such a Weasley character. He also felt that the series’ shift towards more dramatic material made Burns’ cartoonish antagonism unsuitable. The series explains Burns’ departure as being somewhat heartbroken when his affair with Margaret ended on a bad note and she became engaged to someone else. MES The season six premiere explains that Frank was sent back to the States for psychiatric evaluation after a drunken night in Seoul. Gary Burghoff
Radar O’Reilly – remained in season 8
Gary Berghoff was the only one left alive after MASH film, and in both he played the role of Corporal “Radar” O’Reilly. However, Radar, seen in the series, was a much more naive and innocent figure and became a real favorite of the audience. In subsequent years, Burghoff grew tired of the show’s schedule.and despite the fact that previous departing actors such as McLean Stevenson and Larry Linville had not had much success, Burghoff decided to leave. MASH during season 8.
Radar MASH the exit is one of the most emotional in the seriesand unlike other departing performers, this happens on the screen. He also made a guest appearance as Radar on AfterMASHbefore appearing in a solo spin-off called V*A*L*T*E*Rwhere the character becomes a police officer. Bye V*A*L*T*E*R was intended to launch another spin-off product, but did not make it past the pilot project.
What These Actors Did After MASH
None of the actors who left MASH had much of a career following their success in comedy-drama series. McLean Stevenson was a fan favorite at MASHbut after leaving the show he didn’t do much other than play a few lead roles in shows like Golden girls. He has also been a guest presenter on Evening show several times, but his career never recovered from his departure MASHand he calls it one of his most regrettable decisions (via Los Angeles Times):
“When I left the show, the mistake was not that I left. The mistake was that I thought everyone in America loved McLean Stevenson. This was not the case. Everyone loved Henry Blake. So if you go and do “The McLean Stevenson Show,” “nobody cares about McLean Stevenson.”
Wayne Rogers leaving the show the way he did and him never signing his contracts led to the franchise moving away from him entirely. Was MASH spin-off series called Trapper John, MD, who followed the character after returning home, but the franchise did not use Rogers and recast Pernell Roberts as Trapper John.. Besides his running House callsRogers’ career primarily consisted of minor roles and recurring characters in She Wrote Murder.
Larry Linville left when he felt his character was no longer a good fit, so it seemed like he might have been better received outside. MASHbut this also did not happen. He mostly just played guest roles in a few TV shows and small appearances in films. This is exactly what Gary Berghoff’s career has been like, as he has also had guest roles on television and appearances on game shows. As for George Morgan, his career turned out to be the most disappointing: after leaving he received only two roles. MASH after the pilot.
