The strongest Undead characters are those who helped bring the survivors to the end of the story, or almost killed them before they even reached that point. Undead is a story about what happens when ordinary people are swept up in the carnage and chaos of a zombie apocalypse, and with survival being the number one priority, these humans need to be able to defend themselves to stay alive. Threats don't always come from the undead, but also from the worst elements of humanity that are loose in a lawless world.
In the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, few survivors had the skills necessary to continue for long. It wasn't until former police officer Rick Grimes found his family in Lori's group that they found someone to help them fight and fight for survival. Throughout the series, more characters joined and even more died, but the strongest Undead the characters continued to be those who could fight the hordes of walkers and, at the same time, kill human enemies who crossed their path. Although only a handful survived, the most powerful Undead characters left an impression on the show.
25
Eugene Porter
Played by Josh McDermitt
When it comes to the strongest Undead characters, very few would think of Eugene Porter. For almost the entire series, he was the most cowardly and would hide and cower in a fight before even defending himself. When he was introduced in Undead Season 4, Eugene lied about who he was just so Abraham would protect him. After Abraham died, he lost his protector and had to learn to survive alone. His greatest asset for survival was his scientific ability, and he used this to stay alive long after many felt he should have died.
Eugene survived Negan and the Commonwealth, two places where he almost met his fate. However, When he was in the Commonwealth, Eugene began to change. He was willing to stand up and fight for those he loved, whether it was Rosita or his future wife, Max. He still wouldn't win many fights on the show, but at least he was more talented than when he arrived.
24
Father Gabriel Stokes
Played by Seth Gilliam
Father Gabriel Stokes was one of the most hated Undead characters for a long time because he wasn't a fighter. He was even more cowardly than Eugene. Gabriel locked people out of his church and let them die to save himself, and tried to betray Rick and the other survivors to stay out of harm's way. Amazingly, despite being so despised and fixated on self-preservation, Father Gabriel has outlasted many of the world's best fighters. Undead and reached the end and beyond.
Unlike Eugene, Gabriel also learned quite a bit from Negan and Daryl and could fight when necessary, although he never took long into a battle before needing help. Although Gabriel is far from being the strongest character in Undead, he is also far from the weakest. His initial cowardice gave way to bravery. By the end of the show, he was one of the five co-leaders of the Coalition and wiped out many walkers, Reapers, and Whisperers on his journey of redemption.
23
The Governor
Played by David Morrissey
One of the first great antagonists Undead, Philip Blake – aka The Governor – is still one of the most fearsome figures Rick's group has encountered. Although he relied heavily on the Woodbury army and his henchmen, he was still an incredibly competent enemy in his own right and still remains one of the strongest characters to appear in Undead. The Governor's fighting skills were greatly amplified by his unbalanced personality, and this made him an extremely dangerous enemy.
Not only was he a manipulator and a master strategist, but he also knew how to wage war on a large scale if necessary. He almost wiped out Rick Grimes and his group before being killed by one of his own in Lilly. He was lethal in a hand-to-hand fight, capitalizing on his own unbridled aggression and rage. The Governor nearly killed Michonne during an altercation and defeated Merle during a one-on-one fight, which was no easy feat. However, the worst beating he ever gave was to Rick, whose injuries took a long time to heal.
22
King Ezekiel
Played by Khary Payton
Not only is he among the strongest characters in Undead, Ezekiel Sutton, better known as King Ezekiel, was certainly among the most distinguished. The leader of the Kingdom formed an entire society based on romanticized medieval principles and was an incredibly effective monarch. However, it does not rank higher than many of the other more dangerous TWD characters for being a man of conscience and principles.
King Ezekiel was a ruler and a lover, more than a fighter.
King Ezekiel was a ruler and a lover, more than a fighter. He was first seen leading his own community with a pet tiger by his side. He also helped build his community a valuable army of fighters, proving that Ezekiel preferred leading to fighting, but could fight when necessary. He also proved his worth during the show, killing dozens of Saviors and even taking the fight to Commonwealth soldiers. There are several of the best fighters in Undead who are stronger than he, but Ezekiel lived to the end, and did not do so sitting on his throne.
21
Carlos Grimes
Chandler Riggs
Carl Grimes was a child when he first appeared in season 1 of Undead, but when he died, in the season 8 episode "Honor," he proved to be one of the most dangerous fighters. Carl Grimes was a polarizing figure for most of his tenure Undeadfans online seemed to hate him. He often made the worst decisions and put his father, Rick and the other survivors in danger more times than he helped them.
However, as he got older - and especially after losing his eye - Carl began to grow up and became a much better fighter along the way. He even impressed Negan with his courage. When Carl died, fans came to his side and complaints about his death were almost as loud as those about his previous mistakes. He became one of the strongest Undead characters before his death and could face almost anyone.
20
Tyreese
Played by Chad Coleman
Introduced in Season 3 and killed off at the end of Season 5, Chad Coleman's Tyreese wasn't around for very long compared to many other characters, but he still remains known as one of the best fighters to ever appear on Undead. Few wanted to get involved with Tyreese when he was alive, and it's easy to see why. Not only was Tyreese very big and physically capable, but he was also a natural fighter who wasn't afraid to take risks.
Despite his imposing appearance, Tyreese was a kind person at heart and never lost sight of the value of considering human life sacred. When it came time to fight, however, Tyreese was a bull in the middle of a charge, and those who got in his way lived to regret it or died too quickly to notice. One thing holding him back is that his comic book counterpart was one of the strongest survivors of all, but the Tyreese in AMC's screen adaptation was a little too passive to be placed higher among the best fighters in Undead.
19
Glenn Rhee
Played by Steven Yuen
While he may be best known for his skills as a scout and explorer, and for his tragic and brutal death at the hands of Negan, Glenn is still one of the strongest fighters on The Walking Dead as well. Glenn was a huge fan favorite due to his fun personality and loving nature, and he proved to be one of the series' moral pillars for a long time. He was the average guy who preferred to enjoy life rather than fight for it, and often helped Rick and the other survivors avoid decisions that would compromise their humanity.
However, as the series progressed, Glenn became a capable fighter who never lost touch with the good man within. Before the apocalypse, Glenn was a pizza delivery boy who was just becoming an adult, and that meant little to no combat experience. However, with time, patience and training, he became a decent strategist and a formidable combatant, lacking only physical strength.
18
Carol
Played by Melissa McBride
What Carol lacks in size and strength, she makes up for with conviction and dedication. Of the entire group, she is perhaps the only one willing to do anything to protect those she cares about. Unfortunately, this forced her to make many painful decisions that took a toll on her gentle mind. As a result, Carol has lost much of her empathy or at least buried it deeply. This allows her to focus on combat, only feeling the effects after the bullets stop flying.
However, Carol's intellect is also one of the main reasons she is one of the best fighters in the world. Undead She is also good at disorienting her opponents during a fight and capitalizing on her own stereotypes to trick them. Carol has proven over time that she would do anything to stop bad people and protect survivors. She murdered countless people with explosives and firearms and even brought a child to death, putting too much pressure on him with her threats. She may not be one of the physically strongest Undead characters, but due to her strong will and determination she is someone no one wants to cross in a fight.
17
Sasha Williams
Played by Sonequa Martin-Green
Sasha Williams began her time Undead traveling with his brother Tyreese and his boyfriend Bob. Of the three, Sasha seemed the most likely to fight when necessary. His brother Tyreese was more passive and Bob was useless in a fight. With that said, Sasha has proven herself to be a formidable warrior, and she's shown this with her companionship, dating Abraham at one point and even earning Negan's respect.
Sasha proved capable of fighting just as well as her formidable brother Tyreese, and although she wasn't as strong as the others, she never gave up. Sasha even took her own life to give her a better chance of killing Negan when she transformed. Not counting the numerous walkers, Sasha claimed several lives in Undead including a group of Saviors and several members of the governor's militia.
16
shane walsh
Played by Jon Bernthal
It's no surprise that Shane was one of the best wrestlers in the world. Undead given his pre-apocalypse career as a police officer. Just like RIck, Shane was used to violence and danger long before zombies became an ever-present danger - and although the end of the world broke him psychologically, it wasn't in a way that made him lose his dangerous edge.
Although Shane Walsh was just in Undead for a few seasons, he quickly established himself as a powerful fighter. He was Rick's best friend and also a deputy sheriff before the apocalypse, and quickly understood that he needed to be ruthless to protect Lori and Carl from both walkers and humans. Shane was not only highly proficient with weapons, but also a capable hand-to-hand combatant. His unbalanced personality and aggressive nature amplified his natural strength, and this made him more unpredictable as the story progressed.
15
Jerry
Played by Cooper Andrews
Jerry began his tenure in Undead as the loyal protector of the King of the Kingdom, Ezekiel. Viewers may have been quick to write him off as a happy-go-lucky secondary character, but Cooper Andrews slowly crept into fans' hearts, appearing in the series until the end. However, Jerry isn't a fan favorite just because of his personality. Just like Ezekiel, Jerry is one of the most dangerous fighters in the world. Undead, and undoubtedly one of the main reasons why Ezekiel's Kingdom flourished in its early days.
While Jerry is typically a friendly and cheerful individual, one certainly doesn't want to achieve the business end of his battle axe. Ezekiel's loyal right-hand man possessed much more physical strength than many of the other characters in the series, even proving capable of splitting a man in half when necessary. As the best fighter in the Kingdom's army, he was easily one of the strongest Undead characters.
14
Elijah
Played by Okea Eme-Akwari
Elijah arrived at Maggie's side when she returned to the series after a long hiatus following Undead season 9. Although he only appeared in Undead in seasons 10 and 11, Elijah left his mark on the show, especially when it came to his fighting ability. As one of the few survivors of Maggie's newest community, Elijah is intensely loyal to his leader, who views him as family.
Although he may not have many fight scenes due to his relatively low appearance count compared to many other TWD characters that fans consider to be one of the most dangerous, Elijah proves to be incredibly skilled with his pair of Japanese kama. Equipped with his twin scythes and his particularly imposing mask, Elijah is easily one of the most formidable fighters in the entire series, one of the strongest Undead characters to be introduced at the end of the show.
13
Aaron
Played by Ross Marquand
Aaron started out as a man of gentle nature, but over the years, since he first appeared in Undead In Season 5, he accumulated a series of chips that permanently changed his character. Surviving until TWD finale in season 11, Aaron has evolved to become one of the best fighters on the series - and his injury is one of the main reasons why.
The originally mild-mannered character's arc came to a head when he lost his hand, which forced Aaron to replace it with a mechanical tool that could be used in battle. Since then, Aaron has become a very dangerous fighter. His jaded personality has granted him the ability to dispatch enemies without any remorse or mercy, and this pays off in a life-or-death encounter. He's a changed man since his debut on the show thanks to the loss of his lover, but that's only made him one of the strongest Undead characters.
12
Rosita Espinosa
Played by Christian Serratos
Although Rosita hasn't always gotten a large percentage of screen time despite being on the show since TWD From Seasons 4 to 11, it was always clear that she was a capable fighter. Starting out as part of Abraham's group, he and Rosita took on the responsibility of protecting Eugene from threats big and small. Abraham trusted her to take care of herself and help complete his mission to deliver Eugene to Washington, D.C.
Later, when she became part of Rick's group, she put her fighting skills on the front lines against a variety of threats, including Negan's Saviors. She made it to the end, and although she didn't survive, she proved her worth as one of the strongest Undead characters. Rosita was responsible for multiple deaths in TWD, including dozens of walkers, as well as several Commonwealth soldiers, Savior Socres, and at least one Whisperer.
11
Maggie Rhee
Played by Lauren Cohan
Maggie Rhee was one of the pillars of Undead since its second season, becoming a fan favorite throughout the following decade. Her romance with Glenn Rhee proved to be one of the show's biggest draws in the early seasons and her storyline following her husband's tragic death was moving and empowering. When the time comes Undead concluded, Maggie was arguably one of the strongest characters and killed several dangerous adversaries (as well as, tragically, Lori Grimes).
Maggie may not have the physical strength that some other survivors have, but she can certainly hold her own in a fight. Her sheer determination to not give in gives her an advantage against her opponents, who typically don't fare as well as she does. Maggie tasted The Walking Dead: Dead City that she became one of the strongest Undead characters, rivaling even characters like Negan.
10
Merle Dixon
Played by Michael Rooker
Just as Shane and Rick were already dangerous and competent fighters thanks to being police officers before the zombie apocalypse, Merle Dixon was prepared for life after the end of the world thanks to being a career criminal. Merle Dixon was Daryl's older brother, who found himself on the opposite side of Rick's war with the Governor.
Despite his troubled nature, Merle was a fan favorite during his time on the series, in part due to his relationship with Daryl, as well as Michael Rooker's charming performance. With a distinctive prosthetic forearm that consisted of a small blade instead of a hand, Merle was formidable in battle. He could easily dispatch any walkers who got too close and even kill many humans along the way. His final fight with the Governor was brutal and violent, but Merle was already despondent, less of a man than before.
9
Negan
Played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Negan wasn't a particularly violent man before the apocalypse began, but the trauma of losing his beloved wife after the apocalypse was in full swing was too much. He quickly learned that the world was full of nefarious humans, far more dangerous than the undead, and prepared himself for what came next. Intimidation tactics are Negan's strongest card, but he's no slouch in the fight either. Against the undead, he's a wrecking ball, but he's also a competent combatant against the living. Even without his trusty Lucille baseball bat, Negan can defeat some powerful fighters in hand-to-hand combat, making him a constant threat.
However, Negan is someone who has spent so much time making other people fight for him that he has lost a step with time. He fell to Rick Grimes in a fight, but Rick allowed him to live. Since that battle, Negan has slowly recovered and shown how deadly he was when he killed Alpha, even though it was a sneak attack. Negan used to be evil, although he is seen in a better light in Dead Citywhere he has proven himself as deadly as ever and is once again one of the strongest Undead characters.
8
Rick Grimes
Played by Andrew Lincoln
Rick Grimes was a sheriff's deputy who had enough training to survive the apocalypse longer than most. However, he was stopped by his good nature and adherence to ethics from the beginning, which almost cost him and his group their lives. It would take a while for him to learn how to find a proper balance. Although not as physically strong or well trained as some others in the Undead universe, Rick was undoubtedly one of the most brutal.
When push came to shove, there was no line he wouldn't cross, and this made him extremely unpredictable in a fight. In one noteworthy episode, Rick gruesomely kills a human by biting his throat during one of the The walking dead more violent battles. While Rick looked dejected Undead ending, he never stayed down for long and has proven over the years that he can win any fair fight, and the same happened when he returned for the spinoff The Walking Dead: Those Who Live.
7
Abraham Ford
Played by Michael Cudlitz
Alongside Glenn, Abraham was one of the survivors of Rick killed by Negan when the group first crossed paths with the iconic villain. However, despite being killed halfway to The walking dead run, he continues to be remembered as one of the strongest characters in the series. Abraham has always preferred brute force over tactical combat techniques, especially when compared to other characters, but it always seemed to work for him.
Abraham was always an imposing presence, whether facing humans or walkers, and his strong military mind and training helped him immensely during the apocalypse. His explosive temper had its pros and cons, encouraging him to fight with everything. There were few who could step into the ring with Abraham and expect to emerge victorious, much less with their teeth intact. Its only real disadvantage was its large size, which hampered its agility.
6
Beta
Played by Ryan Hurst
Each member of the Whisperers is dangerous in their own right, but it is only the muscular giant Beta who is among the best fighters in the world. Undead. He may have played second fiddle to Alpha in Undead, but Beta represented the brutal, immeasurable strength of a man who had nothing to lose and no connections to hold him back.
As the Whisperers' chief enforcer, Beta's job was to carry out Alpha's orders and ensure maximum loyalty to the ideology they shared. In combat, Beta has always been one of the strongest Undead characters. He could destroy multiple opponents at once with a unique combination of incredible strength and combat techniques. In hand-to-hand combat, Beta was extremely dangerous and could avoid painful injuries long enough to strangle or beat his opponents to death.
