Warframe: 1999 will be released on all platforms on Friday, December 13th, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024. Exoskeleton is a free-to-play MMO shooter where players are placed in a fighting machine called a Warframe, each with its own unique abilities. The last expansion was announced over a year ago and a demo was made available in October, but the expansion now finally has an official release date and will arrive sooner than fans expected.
Rebecca Ford of Digital Extremes took the stage in The game prizes tonight for officially announce the release date on December 13, Warframe: 1999. The expansion's due date was revealed with a launch trailer that revealed more details about the long-awaited expansion. The new content will be voiced by a star-studded roster of voice actors, featuring the voices of industry veteran actors Amelia Tyler (Baldur's Gate 3), Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Nick Apostolides (Resident Evil 4 remake) and Neil Newbon (Baldur's Gate 3).
Warframe: 1999 is set in an alternate reality where the New Year's Eve leading into the new century is plagued by a virus outbreak and military occupation. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, Arthur appears, a Warframe prototype that will eventually become the basis for Excalibur. The expansion promises to bring many new characters and a twisting story imbued with romance and nostalgia.

New enemies, frames, missions, locations and more
The latest and greatest expansion to Exoskeleton will send players back in time to embark on a single-player mission in 1999 alongside six Protoframe members from The Hex. The mission will have players defending the city of Höllvania against two formidable new enemies, the Scaldra and the Techrot.1999 will also bring the 59th Warframe, the Cyte-09, armed with many useful abilities such as being able to see and shoot through walls, summon ammo, disappear into the background through camouflage, and more.
Players will have four new mission types to tackle, including a first match that will split eight players into two squads for tense PvPvE battles. Another new feature will allow players to get closer to Protoframes, get to know them better and perhaps even promote some emerging romances.
The city of Höllvania will have plenty to explore, including a shopping mall complete with a playable arcade game, Caliber Chicks 2. Other new content includes two new weapons, a whole new location, cosmetics, and even some quality of life updates like increased weapon capacity and Warframe slots and more. Warframe: 1999 will bring a new adventure to Exoskeleton universe, adding new ways to enjoy the game and new stories to discover. But the title promises to deliver one additional thing: nostalgia.
“Our adventure into the “what if” scenario of 1999 Y2K has been a passion project for many of us,” says Ford. That means adding lots of Easter eggs for the older players who were around to witness the turn of the century. The team paid special attention to '90s kids, with Ford adding that she's “Excited for all the 90s kids to find all the references we created.“The countdown to Y2K begins again tomorrow, December 13th, when Warframe: 1999 is released.
