Bringing a tabletop game to another medium is no easy task, but Baldur’s Gate 3 successfully adapted many aspects of the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition to create a fantastic and complex RPG. Along with spells, magic items, and ability scores are status conditions taken directly from D&Dof Player Handbook. Not everyone played D&D before loading BG3 for the first time, however, causing a bit of confusion for some.
Status conditions can be triggered in a few different ways, with some being imposed by spells, while others depend on the environment around the players to take effect. Conditions in BG3 cover a range of situations, and while some can be beneficial, others can seriously impact the team in combat. There are some great status effects in Baldur’s Gate 3and these are some of the most common people you will encounter.
15
Blind – Significantly affects attack rolls
Caused by spells, familiars, and environmental effects
Blindness is a fairly simple condition that limits a character’s ability to see, which in turn negatively affects them in battle. Blinded targets have the range of their ranged attacks and spells significantly reduced to just three meters/10 feet. All your attack rolls will be at disadvantagewhile attacks against them have advantage.
Blind can be inflicted by spells such as sunbeam
it is clear, Blindness
as well as crow familiars or Wild Shapes. There are also environmental conditions that will cause blindness, such as fog or darkness.
14
Charmed – Prevents attacks on the caster
Caused by spells, Illithid powers, and collective actions
Enchanted is a classic D&D status, the result of being enchanted by a spellcaster. While enchanted, targets cannot attack the caster and the caster has advantage on Charisma checks in dialogue. The most common way for a character to become Charmed is by using Charming person
against them.
However, there is also the Tadpole Charm, an illithid power in BG3which can be used as a reaction. Spells like Calm emotions
and Protection from evil and good
give immunity from being enchanted, along with Elixir of Unmatched Focus
and fae ancestry.
13
Entangled/Entangled – Prevents Movement and Gives Attack Advantage to Enemies
Caused by environmental effects and spells
Entangled and Enwebbed are two distinct conditions that will have the same effect on targets, whether they are the enemy or the group. When tangled/entangled. the target cannot move and its Dexterity saving throws are at disadvantage. However, the most dangerous aspect for trapped targets is that all attack rolls against them have advantage.
Entangled is triggered by spells like Entangle
and areas covered by twisted vines. Enwebbed is caused by contact with webs, whether those created by spells or created by spiders during gameplay.
12
Scared – Terrible for melee attackers
Caused by spells, collective actions, and certain enemy actions
Scared is a particularly annoying condition when used against the party, as it makes any fight immediately more difficult than it needs to be. Scared targets cannot move, but even worse, they will also have disadvantage on their attack rolls and ability checks.
There are tons of spells in BG3 that can cause fear, such as Dissonant whispers
and choleric woundbut there are also certain enemies that utilize features that inflict the Scared condition. This is most notable in the battle with Viconia in the House of Pain with her various Mapped Terror spells.
11
Bleeding – Minor damage over time
Caused by the actions of weapons, grenades, and certain passive resources
Bleeding is a condition that at first does not seem to have much effect, but can quickly turn into tough fights, both for and against the party. Bleeding is typically caused by weapon actions, but thrown items such as shrapnel grenades and spiked lamps also cause bleeding.
Bleeding targets take two slashing damage at the start of the turn for the duration. However, the most dangerous aspect of Bleeding for the group is that it imposes disadvantage on Constitution saving throwswhich can spell disaster for concentrated spellcasters.
10
Poisoned – Disadvantage on skill checks and attacks
Caused by poisoned spells, creatures, and items
As you would expect, the Poisoned condition occurs when a character comes into contact with a poisoned item, substance, or poisonous creature. Spider Familiars and Wild Shapes are a great source of consistent poison damage, as is the spell disease radius.
Poisoned too impose disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks at all times, making him effective in and out of combat. Weapons can also be poisoned using various poisons found throughout. BG3, like the Wyvern Toxin
given in Act 1 or Drow Poison
that can be created.
Caused by certain items
Not all conditions are negative, and Wrath is very useful to the party, especially for melee fighters. Wrath is obtained by using certain equipment that can generate Wrath under specific conditions. For example, the Blood Drinker Costume
allows the user to gain Wrath for two turns whenever damaged by an enemy.
As long as the character has Wrath, he gain an additional damage bonus with melee weapons each turn. The amount of turns Wrath will be active will stack based on items used and actions taken, such as running with Linebreaker boots.
8
Refrigerated – Vulnerability and Damage Resistance
Caused by passive weapons and collective actions of specific enemies
Chilled is a condition that the party will rarely encounter enemies with, but can use to their advantage with the right equipment. The best way is to find the Mourning Frost team at BG3from Act 1, which increases the user’s cold damage.
Chilled makes the affected target even more vulnerable to cold damageat the expense of making them resistant to fire damage. However, Chilled is best used in combination with water, as getting Chilled targets wet will freeze them, preventing them from taking actions or reactions.
7
Wet – Vulnerability and Damage Resistance
Caused by environmental effects, spells, and items
Speaking of Wet, this condition has a similar effect on targets to Cold with a little more. Obviously, targets can become wet after being doused in water, which can come from spells like Create or destroy water
or simply bottles/barrels of water.
Wet targets are resistant to fire damage, but become vulnerable to cold and lightning damage. Wet can be used to great effect by the party, creating water over an area to drench the enemy and then using lightning or arrow spells to electrify the puddle.
6
Paralyzed – Prevents movement, affects saving throws and automatic attack success
Caused by spells, weapon actions, and passive items
Paralyzed is a terrible condition to be struck from within BG3, as it not only causes party members to lose their turn, but also leaves them defenseless in combat. Targets affected by Paralyzed cannot move or take actions, bonus actions, or reactions.
They will automatically fail all Strength or Dexterity saving throws, which makes them vulnerable to AOE effects. However, the worst thing is that all attack rolls made against them will automatically succeedand any done within three meters/10 feet will be automatic crits, which can easily devastate the party in the game’s toughest boss fights.
5
Staggering – Penalty on attack rolls
Caused by passive items
Stagger is another condition more likely to be inflicted on enemies by the party, as the main source of the condition in BG3 It is one of the powerful items of the Adamantine Forge. Staggering imposes a minus one penalty on the affected target’s attack rolls during the duration.
However, each time the effect is triggered it will be reapplied, which allows the number of turns Reeling is active to be accumulated. While one less may not seem like much, it can be potent when combined with other effects like Ban
or other items that activate when an enemy misses.
4
Silenced – Cannot cast spells
Caused by spells, collective actions, and weapon passives
Silenced is a fantastic condition to use against enemies and deeply frustrating when activated on the party. Silenced means that those affected are unable to speak, which prevent them from casting spells with verbal components.
The only advantage of becoming Silenced is that it makes the target immune to thunder damage, but this is highly situational. The most common source is Silence
spell, but Sussur Masterwork weapons are also great for the party to keep on hand, as they will also silence on hit.
3
Stunned – Prevents Movement and Affects Resistance Tests
Caused by spells, Illithid powers, collective actions, and passive items
Stunned acts similarly to Paralyzed, although slightly less disastrous in battle, and is much more common throughout the game. BG3. Stunned targets cannot move or perform actions, reactions or bonus actions. As with Paralyzed, Stunned targets will also automatically fail all Strength and Dexterity saving throws, putting them in danger during AOE attacks.
Finally, all attack rolls against stunned targets will have advantage, though thankfully not automatic criticals. Fortunately, there are some powerful items in BG3 that make the user immune to being stunned, such as Balduran’s Helm
.
2
Prone – Deadly and costly in battle
Caused by attack actions, environmental effects, and spells
Prone occurs when a creature is knocked prone, and while the condition doesn’t seem dangerous, it can be potentially deadly in the wrong situations. This is because all attacks made within three meters/10 feet of the prone target will have advantage.
Ice and grease are perhaps the most common and quickest ways to disrupt an area, knocking enemies down and imposing difficult terrain.
Prone is also costly for those affected, as it will take half their movement speed just to stand, and while prone they cannot move or take actions, bonus actions, or reactions. Things get even worse for spellcasters, as being knocked down instantly ends concentration spells.
Caused by environmental effects, spells, weapon effects, and passive items
Burn is a fairly self-explanatory condition that causes affected targets to take 1d4 fire damage each turn for the duration. Getting rid of Burning is quite easy as it can be removed using a healing potion, by wetting yourself or another party member using the help action.
Burn is one of the most common conditions, as there are many ways to be affected by the large number of fire spells and weapon passives in Baldur’s Gate 3. Alchemist’s Fire
is also a significant source and fire is generally one of the most common environmental effects.
