The Marvel and DC universes have given fans an endless supply of superheroes to love, admire, and root for through their comic adventures. But just as often, these superheroes found romance in each other, creating romances, love stories, and even superhero marriages that have stood the test of time.
Some have become iconic love stories, while others are problematic or controversial enough to make the reader wish the romances never existed. But when it comes to good superhero couples, a select few have risen to the level of not just “fan favorites” but downright untouchable. From the Justice League to the X-Men and every other corner of comics in between. These superhero couples let their love become as defining as their powers.
Black Bolt and Medusa
A couple who proves true love can transcend even words and communication, Black Bolt and Medusa are made for each other. Since Black Bolt was unable to speak due to his sonic energy abilities, the Inhuman Monarch was isolated throughout his childhood (Medusa visited him regularly and their strong bond formed over the years).
Once Black Bolt came out of isolation at the age of 18 and was allowed to follow his true destiny, they fell in love and never looked back. This couple deserves the title of passionately bonded King and Queen of the Inhumans, even if witnesses can only see their love in their body language and crimson hair.
Black Panther and Storm
Movie adaptations of Marvel heroes have never come close to crossing paths, but in the long history of Marvel comics, the on-again, off-again romance between Black Panther and Storm is the type of drama that drama readers can only dream of. The true definition of a power couple, the love story between the titular Avenger and the veteran X-Men began when the couple were still teenagers. Naturally, their connection only grew stronger when they met again as adults (and rarely met superheroes at the top of Marvel’s power rankings).
Those who know T’Challa don’t need to be convinced that Ororo is the only woman worthy of sitting next to him as Queen of Wakanda, but a love this strong isn’t meant to last. With destinies, loyalties, and personalities clashing as often as they coincide, the romance between Black Panther and Storm might seem downright doomed. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that they were the power couple of the Marvel Universe in every way.
Ant-Man and the Wasp
This is undoubtedly one of the most tumultuous (and painful) relationships in the Marvel Universe. Ant-Man and the Wasp (Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne) began their story as crime-fighting partners, with the brilliant Pym granting Janet superpowers in his quest to avenge her father. Teamwork turned into love, and the couple got married. Things only got worse from there. And that doesn’t include their role in creating the original Avengers.
In one of the most controversial moments in Marvel history, and certainly one of the worst things Ant-Man has ever done, Hank physically hit Janet, sending their marriage down a completely different path in comic book history. Hank Pym’s abusive behavior was eventually reconsidered, acknowledged, and expanded upon as part of his character weakness. Needless to say, Janet went far beyond this meeting, finding superhero success (and more romance) with Marvel’s finest.
Green Arrow and Black Canary
Proving that a hot-and-cold, on-again, off-again romance can still be considered one of the most powerful in history, the iconic pairing of Green Arrow and Black Canary is a phenomenon in its own right. There is no one better to fight alongside them, and no one is more guaranteed to cause their explosive rage. But DC fans know that the connection between Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance is woven into the fabric of the universe itself.
Connected
The chemistry between Black Canary and Green Arrow is never lacking, promising increased passion every time their paths cross (which also leads to the birth of their son Connor). With the chemistry so undeniable that fans have never even entertained a happy ending with anyone else, sparks will fly between Ollie and Dina until the DC Universe cools down.
Daredevil and Elektra
The world may never know why heroes are drawn to villains in matters of the heart, but if there’s a deadlier example to point to in comics, Daredevil and Elektra are hard to top. Trained as assassins and bred to kill, Elektra and Daredevil’s relationship always seemed to be full of sadness and sadness, which ultimately led to Elektra’s death (more than once).
Even though they always seemed to go their separate ways, the pairing of Matt Murdock and Electra Natchios always remains unbreakable. Their morals have been divisive in the past, but with Elektra becoming Daredevil in Matt’s absence, the future may finally give these Marvel lovers a happily ever after.
Batgirl and Nightwing
Nightwing is no stranger to romance, and there was a time when his relationship with Starfire was considered the endgame. That is until another love interest turns out to be his true soulmate: Batgirl. Barbara Gordon has stuck by Dick Grayson’s side through thick and thin, from their early days as Batgirl and Robin to their current adventures as Oracle and Nightwing..
It took a while, but now that they’re in a relationship, they’re both the happiest people they’ve ever been in their entire lives (as far as superheroes can be these days). Not even the worst enemies Blüdhaven has to offer can break the bond that separates Nightwing and Batgirl.
Luke Cage and Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, perhaps the happiest superhero couple in the Marvel Universe, built a friendship even before they began their relationship (which famously began with a spirited one-night stand). Unlike most superhero novels, Jessica and Luke’s love story features the birth of a daughter, Danielle Cage.
While their committed relationship had an unconventional start, that didn’t stop them from going all in and becoming one of Marvel’s most established husband and wife teams. In fact, it’s established that Dani has become a major character in many versions of Marvel’s future (proving that these two have also turned their love into excellent parenting).
Batman and Catwoman
A DC romance that always seems to survive, Batman and Catwoman are a superhero couple who know how to have “date nights.” With a shared passion for rooftops and slightly different moral codes for criminal behavior, it’s easy to see and understand the attraction between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle at a glance.
Starting out as relative enemies, Selina, a thief turned hero, and Bru Wayne, a billionaire vigilante, have become the feared duo of Gotham City and true partners in every sense of the word. Even if their wedding didn’t go exactly as planned, the duo has a habit of self-sacrifice. Bruce sacrifices his life for Gotham City, and Selina sacrifices her happiness with Bruce… so he can become the Batman the world needs.
Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman
Considered one of the longest-running marriages in the Marvel Universe, Sue Storm and Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman) have endured countless separations, disagreements, and supervillains that seemed poised to tear them apart forever.
Although raising two children has no longer made them cooperate or agree, the facts clearly show that the leaders of the Fantastic Four are guaranteed to stay together… even if it might be better for them to separate forever.
Vision and Scarlet Witch
A tragic love story for some, but an epic for the ages for others, the union of Vision and Scarlet Witch has all the hallmarks of an immortal love story. And this was true even before the couple created children, using Mephisto’s power and warping reality to give them domestic happiness. One is driven and defined by mysticism and magic, the other is bound by science fiction and artificial life, these two are the definition of “opposites attract.”
True to the comics that first brought them together, adapting these heroes’ love stories into the MCU means they’ll forever be remembered for their love story above all else. Whatever Wanda and Vision’s movie future holds, their decades-long comic history cements their place among the hapless Marvel fans.
Mister Miracle and Big Barda
Mister Miracle had a bad time when his father gave him to Darkseid to end the war between New Genesis and Apokolips. Luckily, the silver lining came in the form of Big Barda, one of Granny Goodness’s female furies. Scott and Barda fell in love against their grandmother’s wishes and escaped Apokolips together to start a new life on Earth..
Problems beset them at every turn despite their attempts to return to normalcy, but with the birth of their first child on the horizon, Mister Miracle and Big Barda can finally enjoy freedom from Darkseid’s tormenting world… for now.
Cyclops and Jean Gray
Cyclops and Jean Gray have a complicated history in the history of the X-Men. Their whirlwind romance began when they were students of Charles Xavier, and they experienced many ups and downs over the years. After Jean’s supposed death during the Phoenix Saga, Scott married Madeline Pryor, although the relationship became heated after Jean’s return.
Connected
They’ve had other romances here and there—Jean has long been the object of Wolverine’s affections, and Scott once shared a passionate relationship with Emma Frost—but these two X-Men always find their way back to each other in the end.
Superman and Lois Lane
The superhero couple that started it all. Superman and Lois Lane is undoubtedly the most iconic romance in comics.. Ever since Superman first swept her off her feet—literally—they had been an inseparable couple. As much as Lois is prone to throwing herself off buildings in search of a story, Superman is always there to catch her.
Lois and Clark’s relationship blossomed over time and they have now celebrated over ten years of marriage. Lois now becomes Superwoman after the events Absolute powerthese two deserve recognition as the most powerful couple in the DC Universe!
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy
When we think of superhero couples, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy may not be the first to come to mind. Despite their villainous pasts, their love for each other inspires these Gotham scoundrels to become better people. After Harley’s abusive relationship with the Joker, her healthier dynamic with Ivy is the romance she deserves..
Ivy keeps Harley from her crazy antics while Harley shows Ivy that people aren’t so bad after her vengeful crusade blinds her. While Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy don’t have a clean criminal record, their adoration for each other makes their relationship one of the sweetest in DC.
Gambit and Rogue
It takes something special for a comic book relationship to be promising. “wedding of the century” but the term remained in effect when X’s wedding between Kitty Pryde and Colossus was called off…leaving their teammates Gambit and Rogue to walk to the altar and prove that their romance never failed and never would. Aside from being a “fan-favorite” couple, the volatility and freewheeling personalities of Remy LaBeau and Anne Marie are the kind of lightning in a bottle that can’t be manufactured.
To understand why Gambit and Rogue share a bond that few heroes can rival, just look at Rogue’s improvised wedding vows on the spot:
“We’ve been through so much, you and me. We faced challenges that other couples have never faced. But we always keep finding ways back to each other. This is what I promise you… no matter what happens, I will always find my way back to you.”
And just like that, The Most Perfectly Cast X-Men Heroes Show The Difference In Comic Book Romance. That no matter what crooked and crazy storytellers or publishers may throw at them, true love simply means finding your way back to the end of the issue.
