Baldur’s Gate 3 is exceptional in many ways, from combat to NPCs and the depth of their stories. However, the game has a surprising downside early on when you use Taw, the default name for a custom character, as the protagonist rather than an origin character – excluding the Dark Urge. Character creation options are limited, so customizing Taw falls flat compared to the rest of the game, meaning that the best choice may be to look for mods to supplement existing creation options.
The modding community has, as always, acted quickly to start pumping out content for Baldur’s Gate 3. While modders generally post a way to support them with donations, downloading and using mods is almost always free. As such, below are some of the best free mods that can be used to create the perfect tav, reimagining the lackluster character creation options included in BG3. Remember to Make save files as backups before modding In case conflicts occur in order to avoid losing progress.

A mod that fits right in
Ghouls Customization Compendium, created by Nexus Mods user Ghouls0 rulesis a nice grab bag mod for those who want to knock out a variety of character customization options in one go. The main focus is on new heads, but it also includes a solid variety of horns and a few choices for hair and beards. Unlike some mods that are focused on overhauling the style, Ghouls Customization Compendium delivers content that looks completely in line with official material of the game.
The best part of the mod is that even though it focuses on humans, half-elves, elves, drow, and tieflings, it covers its ground fairly evenly, with plenty for every body type. It is a good choice for those who just want more options without rocking the boat in any major regard.

Customizer’s Compendium – Unlocker for NPC options
Steal the style of the best NPCs
It is possible to run across random NPCs that share the same faces, hairstyles, or other elements as a custom Tav character in Baldur’s Gate 3As minor characters are built on the same options available to players. Main characters, however, always have their own distinct views. Customizer’s Compendium takes an ax to this divide, opening up unique features of major NPCs To be used in the character creation process.
Customizer’s Compendium is a mod by Alanasp on nexus mods, but compatibility with the latest version of the game may have problems, which a modified re-upload by pepperjk turn around. Not surprisingly, it doesn’t provide much detail about what the mod does, but the sparse descriptions belie a major overhaul suite.

Trips’ accessory collection
Glasses & Piercings Galore
The Whispers of the Divine Aasimar mod is not the only great creation by TripsWhich is also the source and namesake of Trips accessory collection. Although Baldur’s Gate 3 Has a lot of accessories that can be found throughout the game in the amulet and ring categories, not so much in other departments.
Trips’ accessory collection covers the options for character faces, Adding a selection of piercings along with a monocle and circular earrings. A pair of piercings can be further customized with gems for a truly unique look. Most importantly, the accessories are designed to behave properly during facial animations, so any weird clipping should kill immersion when a tav with a lip ring is grimacing at something.

Tav’s Hair Salon
Added new hairstyle options
Of all the character customization options available in BG3Hairstyles may be the most abundant. However, a lot of the default styles are fairly similar, and the long hair options are pretty unclear without as many choices for hair tied back or hair that’s longer than shoulder-length. While tav’s hair salon, uploaded to nexus mods by ToariAdds dozens of new hair options, the downside is It is mostly for elves, human and Tefling characters using body types 1 and 2.
9
Faces of Faerun
Click more default faces
Unlike hairstyles, there are far fewer options for faces in character creation. Each race only has eight default choices for faces, and this is particularly limiting in design, as it is not possible to change individual facial features like eyes or noses, which is often seen in character creation systems for other games.

Horns of Faerun
More horns for tieflings and other BG3 races
Another mod created by Nexus Mods user AloyjaHorns of Faerûn only adds a few new horn options, but they are much more elaborate than the default options available in BG3. It also allows characters to have horns without a tiefling, although this mod is not compatible with Dragonborn. Besides providing extra options for teeflings, The Antlers are especially great for a Druid character.
7
The eyes of the beholder
Very increases eye customization
BG3 Allows a bit of selection for eye color and includes the option to have heterochromia on TAV, but Eyes of the Beholder by Worker On Nexus mods, eye customization takes even further. This mod adds glowing effects, more colored sclera options and even various pupil shapes to choose from. After all, Minthara just needs the classic handlebar mustache to take her villainy to the next level.
3
Vesnelle’s hair collection
Even more new hairstyles
Another hair mod that adds more options, Wessnelles hair collection by Nexus Mods does not add as many hairstyles as Tav’s Hair Salon. Basket full of equipment
New Armor & Clothing for Tav
Basket full of equipment from Nexus Mods user AnteMaxx adds A massive amount of armor and equipment for Tav to wear. Over 800 pieces, to be exact. The range of NPC gear that is otherwise unavailable, like Orin’s outfit, Gortash’s gear and even the armor of the Oatbreaker Knight.
Although this is a mod for outfits and not part of character creation, the customization options it brings deserve a mention since a character’s outfit is part of their identity as much as any other part of them. The linked version of this mod is “SFW“(Safe for work), but there is another version for less modest tows.
1
New character creation presets WIP
Brand new presets for character customization
Compared to the mods above, New Character Creation Presets WIP, another mod by Toari On Nexus Mods, adds the most character presets to start creating TAV with. This mod adds dozens of both male and female presets. And perhaps the most impressive feat is that none of the presets are replacements, meaning This mod will not change the appearance of any NPCs By replacing their preset design with a replacer that can be used on TAV, since TAV can use origin character presets. The presets are full editions that stand on their own, and the “WIP“In the name means it is still being worked on, so even more options may be added in the future.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game that excels in several ways, from combat to storytelling. However, its character creation options for Tav and The Dark Urge feel quite plain, especially with other games including incredibly extensive creation features in comparison. The modding community, however, has taken on the task of adding more variety and options, so Tav can kill their way through Faerûn in Baldur’s Gate 3.
