Star Wars: Skeleton Crew provided a simple and moving answer to the ultimate question Star Wars question, 12 years after Disney officially acquired Lucasfilm: what does it really mean to be a Jedi? Skeleton Crew is different from any Star Wars show produced before. Instead of focusing on the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith, the mystery of the Force, or important factions like the Mandalorians and the Empire, Skeleton Crew tells a more realistic story involving lost children, pirates, and mysterious treasure. planet.
Of course, the Jedi still influence the story – Jude Law's Jod Na Nawood may or may not be a former Jedi, and young Wim is obsessed with the Jedi legends of Attin. So much so that he is quick to trust anyone willing to help him and his friends, desperate for a glimpse of the valor and kindness of the Jedi he reads about in their stories. Happily, Skeleton Crew episode 6, “Zero Friends Again” showed audiences and Wim himself exactly what it means to be a Jedi and how anyone can follow his lead.
For the children of the Skeleton Crew, Jedi are simply those who save lives
In the episode, the children try to find their way back to the ship in Lapuna. It turns out that Lapuna isn't a relaxing spa at all, and they soon find themselves stranded in a cold, frozen desert. After several disagreements, the group eventually splits up, with Wim and KB heading further into the desert while Neel and Fern head up towards the ship. After the group splits, KB's boost begins to corrode and fail, making it nearly impossible for her to move a muscle and stay alive.
For these children, and especially for Wim, saving lives is the most basic rule of the Jedi Order. Jedi are protectors, so rescuing people should be their biggest goal.
Fortunately, Wim is there to help, and together they work to resolve the problem as best they can. After creating a new micro-fuse, KB's augs start working again, and she thanks him in a way that means a lot to Wim, calling him a Jedi. And why shouldn't she? For these children, and especially for Wim, saving lives is the most basic rule of the Jedi Order. Jedi are protectors, so rescuing people should be their biggest goal. That's exactly what Wim did for KB, even without a lightsaber.
This is truly what it means to be a Jedi
In simpler terms, this is what being a Jedi really means. Yes, the Jedi use lightsabers, they fight, they deal with the threat of the Sith, they fight in the Clone Wars, they pilot starships and they use the Force, but most of all, the Jedi were made to protect those who cannot protect themselves, no matter the situation. They may be forced to defend someone using their lightsaber, but they may also simply need to help, giving someone another chance at life and adventure.
Involvement in the Clone Wars and concern about the darkness of the Sith led the Jedi astray. They forgot that their main mission, what it really means to be a Jedi, is to be someone who provides help, no matter the cost. That's the lesson Wim should take from his experience with KB in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew also - Lightsabers may be cool, but helping people is much, much cooler.
