james gunn Superman promises to be one of the most exciting comic book movie events of the 2020s, and the long-awaited trailer has a lot to answer for. Set to officially launch the new DC Cinematic Universe born from the vision of James Gunn, Superman has a lot of high expectations to bear, leading a new franchise after the disappointing DCEU. Recently, Gunn announced a release window for SupermanThe first trailer for, reportedly released in mid-December 2024.
There is still a lot to be proven about the future Superman film that the first glimpse of official footage will finally reveal. So far, official sanctioned images, leaked photos and videos from the set, and statements from James Gunn himself have been the only hints about what the film will have in store. Viewing the trailer will finally put many of the reported elements of Superman in context, while also setting fans’ expectations for the important film to come.

David Corenswet’s Superman costume in action
Official images are not enough to accurately assess the feel of the new suit
One of the first official images to be released about Superman was the last incarnation of a live-action Superman costume, worn by actor David Corenswet. The image shows Corenswet sitting in a somber Superman-like pose, adjusting his suit’s boots while some sort of large-scale battle with energy beams falling in the background. Many fans were quick to criticize Superman’s new look, unimpressed with the biker jacket’s bulky padding, dramatically revamped “S” logo, and overall looseness. The return of Superman’s red trunks was also not universally well-received.
Perhaps seeing David Corenswet’s costume in motion will help sell hesitant audiences on Superman’s new costume, which may look better in action than as a still image. After all, Superman looks best with a cape fluttering dramatically in the wind as he springs into action. With any luck, the trailer won’t fail to feature clean, clear images of Superman flying while dressed in the new costume.

Chemistry by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Clark Kent and Lois Lane
Their romance will be key to Superman’s success
As exciting as superhero action can be, those superficial thrills have never been the only thing that made the Superman movies and TV shows work. Historically, the best live-action interpretations of Superman have nailed the chemistry between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, a foundational romance that helps anchor the all-powerful hero into a relatable being. More recently, Henry Cavill and Amy McAdams left a lot to be desired in that department, with their own Clark Kent and Lois Lane never feeling like they had an incredibly strong bond.
Hopefully, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will be a stronger on-screen combination, which will help form the film’s emotional core. Ideally, the trailer will be able to assure future DCU audiences that the franchise’s tentpole film won’t be slowing down in the romance department. Considering David Corenswet’s experience as a romantic lead in films such as Look both ways, Expectations are high for Clark Kent’s heartthrob status.

How Krypto appears in action
The scruffy superdog needs to sell himself a little more
Another more controversial revelation about the next Superman in the official images was the soft launch of Krypto the Superdog. In a promotional image, David Corenswet’s Superman sits on the moon looking down at Earth alongside the first live-action version of Krypto the Supergdog, Superman’s pet dog with the same powers as him. However, while Krypto is traditionally drawn as a purebred white Labrador Retriever, James Gunn’s Krypto is decidedly scruffier and smaller, inspired by the director’s own dog, Ozu.
To say the least, the cinematic incarnation of Krypto received a lukewarm reception, with many fans expressing disappointment that the first live-action version of the canine character didn’t align with his classic design. The upcoming trailer could delight chilled audiences of the new Krypto, as seeing him in motion could be adorable enough to overcome any qualms of comic book inaccuracy. It will also be interesting to see how big of a role Krypto plays in the story, whether he’s a side note or a constant presence throughout.

An official look at Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern costume
Expectations are high for Guy Gardner’s first live-action film
Superman won’t be the only DC hero to appear in his self-titled film. Edi Gathegi’s Terrific has already been shown off in set photos, presenting an incredibly accurate depiction of the tech genius hero taken straight from the pages of a comic book. However, one of DC’s silliest hero designs is also on the cast list for Superman, and has not yet been displayed in any official or unofficial capacity. Nathan Fillion will join Superman as Green Lantern, but instead of the archetypal version of the hero Hal Jordan, Fillion will star as Guy Gardner.
Known as an arrogant, obnoxious, and bristling hero, Guy Gardner is unique when it comes to appearances, wearing a sleeveless green and white motorcycle jacket in place of the standard Green Lantern jumpsuit. Famously, Guy Gardner is also known for wearing his red hair in a hilariously high cut that makes him stand out anywhere. It’s hard to resist the anticipation of seeing how faithful to the comics James Gunn will be in this particularly silly character design and how the hair will look on top of Nathan Fillion’s talented head.

A good look at Nicholas Hoult’s performance as Lex Luthor
A Superman movie is only as good as its villain
While speculating about the film’s heroes is all well and good, any Superman film relies on a dastardly villain to remain entertaining. Nicholas Hoult was announced as Lex Luthor for Superman long ago, shaving his head for the role to ensure an accurate portrayal. Hoult is no stranger to comic book movie roles, playing the younger version of Beast in the X-Men prequel series, and has sported a bald patch before on screen as Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Surprisingly little is still known about exactly how Hoult will play Lex Luthor, and his appearance is one of the most highly anticipated aspects of the film. Superman trailer. Considering the painful disappointment of Jesse Eisenberg’s latest live-action take on the famous mastermind villain, the bar is set pretty low to begin with. Superman, but Hoult certainly has the potential to exceed expectations. It will be interesting to see how Hoult ranks among all the other live-action Lex Luthor performances.

An official look at Mily Alcock’s Supergirl and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl
Some worthy DC heroines will also appear in the film
Mr. Terrific and Guy Gardner aren’t the only notable heroes who will share the screen with Superman in his self-titled film. Some famous DC heroines are also set to join the film’s cast, with Mily Alcock as Supergirl and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. Although Supergirl received a cinematic interpretation relatively recently, last year Flash, played by Shasha Calle, Superman will mark the first time Hawkgirl has had a live-action film, although her avian sidekick Hawkman has appeared in Black Adam.
The chance to catch a glimpse of these two heroes in action will be one of the most exciting prospects of the upcoming Superman trailer. Mily Alcock’s presence was greatly missed in HBO’s second season House of the Dragon, so seeing her return to such a huge character will be a real treat. Isabella Merced will also be a welcome presence in big-name films following the smash success of Foreigner: Rômulo.

How much screen presence will the other heroes have
Hopefully Superman’s story won’t be drowned out by other heroes
With all the excitement and anticipation added by the presence of so many other unique DC heroes, it’s important to remember that James Gunn’s next film will be a Superman story through and through. In the past, the DCEU has seemed perhaps too eager to put multiple characters into single films, with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Flash, and Black Adam all being saddled with hero-heavy casts outside of their titular lineups. James Gunn will have to ensure that Superman himself remains the focus of the film.
The trailer should give a better look at how frequently these secondary heroes will appear, whether they’re one-off cameos or lasting companions throughout the runtime. In both cases, James Gunn has proven himself quite adept at navigating large superhero casts, as proven by the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad. If there’s one director who can properly balance such a complicated list, it’s him.

How the tone will be different from the DCEU
James Gunn Could Promise a Brighter, More Hopeful Superman
Another thing the DCU will need to do with Superman Distinguishing itself from its predecessor cinematic universe is establishing a different tone. Informed from the start by Zack Snyder’s dark sensibilities, Superman’s appearances in the DCEU have often been criticized for a fundamental misunderstanding of the character. The series went rather dark with Henry Cavill’s Superman, making him seem more like a tragic messiah figure than a traditional hero, emphasizing Kal-El’s alien heritage over Clark Kent’s Midwestern American upbringing.
Ideally, the trailer Superman will be able to convey a refreshing and brighter tone, returning to the old Superman films with Christopher Reeves as a more hopeful message for humanity. It’s safe to say that no film has been able to perfectly adapt Superman’s comedic persona, either by being too dark or too theatrical, although many TV shows, such as Superman and Loisthey nailed his realistic and optimistic temperament. There are great hopes that Superman The trailer will demonstrate a more inspiring comic book universe that doesn’t shy away from the silliness inherent to the genre.

A Look at Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen
It Might Be the Most Perfect DC Movie Cast Ever
As great as the superpowered characters are, seeing some of Superman’s more human supporting actors in action is an equally exciting prospect for the upcoming trailer. Above all, Jimmy Olsen’s vision of the film will be an exciting revelation following the announcement of Skyler Gisondo’s casting as the cheerful photographer sidekick. The Daily Planet. Gisondo made a name for himself as the excitable and confused teenager Eric Bemis in the Netflix film. Santa Clarita Diet, making him a perfect character for the traditional Jimmy Olsen version.
The DCEU films did Jimmy Olsen dirty, trying to make him as cool and edgy as the rest of the universe by turning him into a war photographer and CIA secret agent whose only notable contribution to the plot was dying. Worst of all, Superman’s traditional best friend doesn’t even share a single screen with Henry Cavill’s Superman. After such an odd use of the character, the chance to see Skyler Gisondo as a cheerful, friendly, bowtie-wearing version of Jimmy Olsen makes the Superman even more exciting trailer.

An official look at Ultraman and more information about the film’s villain
Superman’s Dark Reflection May Finally Get an Official Statement
One of the worst kept secrets surrounding Superman is the almost confirmed appearance of Ultraman as a major villain alongside Lex Luthor. In addition to rumors and unconfirmed leaks, post photos of Superman emerged featuring a costumed character arresting Superman who could very well be Ultraman. Hopefully, the film’s first trailer can finally confirm or deny the appearance of the evil Superman clone in the upcoming film.
Not to be confused with the legendary tokusatsu character of the same name, Ultraman in DC comics is a parallel universe version of Superman who runs an evil version of the Justice League called the Crime Syndicate. However, there are rumors that SupermanUltraman will actually be a creation of Lex Luthor, sent to combat Superman at his level of strength. It has even been suggested that Ultraman will transform into Bizarro throughout the film, a possibility from the trailer for Superman could very well reveal.
