10 One Piece Powers & Techniques Netflix’s Live-Action Show Will Struggle To Get Right

The Netflix One Piece live-action show has been excelling at adapting Eiichiro Oda’s story so far, but there are some powers and transformations that future seasons will struggle to get right. One Piece season 1 proved itself more than capable of bringing the manga and anime’s liveliest moments to the screen convincingly, transforming McKinley Belcher III into a terrifying Arlong. This proved that the critically acclaimed adaptation could get the anime’s high fantasy characters right, but whether it can tackle its advanced transformations is another question.

One Piece season 2 should be hitting screens in 2025, with filming beginning in July and expected to wrap in December. With that in mind, it’s a great time to look forward to seeing some of the best powers from the anime and manga in live-action. There is a wide range of Devil Fruits in the world of One Pieceand these rare and sought-after super-fruits give their consumers bizarre and magical powers. Devil Fruits also trigger outlandish transformations, guaranteeing some challenging moments for the show in upcoming seasons.

Blueno Opening Doors In Walls

Door-Door Fruit

Blueno from One Piece.

CP9 member Blueno ate the Door-Door Fruit, enabling one of the strange powers that One Piece will struggle to get right. Blueno’s consumption of the Door-Door Fruit allows him to open portals at will, creating doors in solid substances and even the air. The Door-Door Fruit, also known by anime watchers and manga readers as the Doa Doa no Mi, is a rare Paramecia fruit, enabling superhuman ability.

There are two other types of Devil Fruit. Logia fruits enable elemental control, and Zoan fruits enable transformation into some kind of creature. While all types of Devil Fruit offer their own unique kind of challenge to set designers, producers, and special effects artists, the Paramecia fruit should create some intriguing CGI opportunities. As Blueno disturbs walls with portals, the sets will have to heal over afterwards as if nothing happened.

Smoker Evaporating

Smoke-Smoke Fruit

Fan-favorite Smoker will be played by Callum Kerr in One Piece and will demonstrate his Smoke-Smoke Fruit abilities soon. This may create a significant challenge for showrunners, who will have to portray the Marine with numerous smoke-related powers. Since consuming the Smoke-Smoke Fruit, Smoker can not just transform into smoke, he can create weapons from it and use them against opponents. On the Grand Line, Smoker presents Monkey D. Luffy and crew with hostility.

As a Marine, Smoker is obliged to take down the Straw Hat Pirates. Smoker’s appearance in One Piece season 2 was teased by the last episode of One Piece season 1. Although this episode of One Piece didn’t show Smoker’s face, it showed his white hair and distinctive jacket, confirming that Smoker’s fantastical powers will confront Luffy’s team in the coming episodes. A clash with Portgas D. Ace is promised by the animewhich will pit Smoker’s Logia-type fruit powers against another dangerous Logia-type fruit.

Portgas D. Ace Shooting Fireballs

Flame-Flame Fruit

Portgas D. Ace must be one of the best One Piece characters, so the live-action show must take his fiery powers seriously. With casting rumors for One Piece’s Ace flying around, it can’t be long until Netflix’s plans for the hero become clear, and the reality of his Flame-Flame Fruit transformation can start to be visualized properly. Ace is Luffy’s surrogate brother and their relationship should be central to the show, making Ace and his powers critical.

Related

Ace’s Logia-type fruit allows him to control the element of fire. Ace can turn his body into fire, choosing which parts suit him in a fight. He can also rain fire down on opponents, seeing to their submission or total defeat. It will be interesting to see how realistic Ace’s fight with Smoker isand how much real fire the show will use in these scenes. Either way, season 2 or 3 may present some Ace powers of intrigue.

Daz Bones With Saws For Arms

Dice-Dice Fruit

Daz Bones aka Mr. 1 battles Roronoa Zoro in One Piece.

Daz Bones is an epic Baroque Works One Piece villain that the Netflix live-action show has to get right, including his horrifying Dice-Dice Fruit transformation. Also known as the Supa Supa no Mi, the Dice-Dice Fruit enables its consumers to manipulate sharp metal. The appropriately named Daz Bones can turn his flesh into hard metal, creating weaponry out of his own body. One of Daz Bones’ scariest powers might be adding spinning saws to his arms, creating a lethal situation for enemies.

Roronoa Zoro took on Daz Bones in the Arabasta arc, creating one of the swordsman’s more memorable battles. It will be hard for practical effects to cover Daz Bones’ transformation, as the idea of attaching realistic-looking blades to him is far-fetched. They may stay on for a short time, but flinging them around may be a stretch. CGI may have to fill in the gaps. Regardless, this will be a fascinating Devil Fruit to witness in live-action.

Crocodile Creating Sandstorms

Sand-Sand Fruit

Crocodile has already been cast for One Pieceso his appearance is guaranteed and should create a storm of the sandy variety on the show. Crocodile may be one of the toughest foes to face Monkey D. Luffy, with his Sand-Sand Fruit granting him the ability to turn into sand. Crocodile can impressively create sandstorms and bladed weapons out of sand while dehydrating people to death with his right hand.

Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit powers will combine with Crocodile’s Sand-Sand Fruit powers to make this one challenging fight to adapt into live-action.

Crocodile’s power to transform into sand makes him particularly elusive and hard to kill, which is one struggle that is coming up for Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit powers will combine with Crocodile’s Sand-Sand Fruit powers to make this one challenging fight to adapt into live-action. However, if done right, Crocodile’s underrated Devil Fruit could easily provide some of the best moments on the show.

Rob Lucci Becoming A Leopard

Cat-Cat Fruit

Rob Lucci ate a Zoan-type fruit, which can trigger his transformation into a leopard-human hybrid. Although not the most powerful of transformations in One Piece history, this beastly anthropomorphism may actually be one of the hardest things for the Netflix show to adapt. While many Paramecia fruits could be resolved on the show through green screens, and Logia fruits can be tackled with CGI, turning a human into a cat-man hybrid offers no simple hack.

Rob Lucci’s clash with Luffy is one of the epic One Piece fights to feature in the Water 7 saga…

Having eaten the Cat-Cat Fruit, Rob Lucci has multiple forms to offer the Netflix show. Rob Lucci has a hybrid form, plus the ability to turn into a full leopard. Rob Lucci’s clash with Luffy is one of the epic One Piece fights to feature in the Water 7 saga, but there are even more Lucci vs. Luffy moments coming for the Netflix show, if the anime is anything to go by. Lucci and Luffy’s fights keep leveling up as the characters domaking their dynamic one of the ones to watch in the show.

Jabra’s Hybrid Form

Dog-Dog Fruit

Jabra in One Piece.

Jabra is a member of CP9 who could make an appearance in the show and will challenge the show with his ability to turn into a wolf. Transitioning to CP0 eventually, Jabra is a mainstay of the One Piece anime and manga’s intelligence agencies. With his Fu Manchu mustache, Jabra is a unique and notable antagonist of the Enies Lobby arc. Destined to make waves with his Devil Fruit abilities, Jabra’s powers could be incredibly difficult to adapt. Like Rob Lucci, Jabra can transform into a human-animal hybrid and also into the animal related to the Devil Fruit he ate.

…putting Jabra’s actor into a motion capture suit may be the best way to transform him on-screen.

Jabra’s various wolf forms could present some serious headaches for the One Piece crew, with animatronics and special effects all possible entry routes into Jabra scenes. One Piece created animatronic snails for the Transponder Snails, rendering this one technique the team is clearly happy to use to adapt fantasy creatures. But putting Jabra’s actor into a motion capture suit may be the best way to transform him on-screen.

3

Kaku Becoming A Cube

Ox-Ox Fruit

Kaku from One Piece looking off into the distance in a white hat and clothes.

Kaku’s appearance is surely one of the funniest parts of CP9and his ridiculous power-up will make him even harder to get right for Netflix’s One Piece. CP9, otherwise known as Cipher Pol 9, provides One Piece with a wide range of major antagonists for the Straw Hat Pirates. This group is focused on covert assassination of threats to the World Government, assisted by the Devil Fruit powers of its members.

Kaku uses his Devil Fruit power-ups innovatively, once turning into a cube to defeat Zoro.

Kaku ate an Ox-Ox Fruit of a particular variety, which transforms him into a giraffe-type being. This Zoan-type fruit allows Kaku both hybrid and giraffe forms, while his square nose in human form results in a square nose in giraffe form. Kaku uses his Devil Fruit power-ups innovatively, once turning into a cube to defeat Zoro. The One Piece show has proven it can match Eiichiro Oda’s creativitymaking Kaku an exciting prospect.

2

Tony Tony Chopper’s Hybrid Form

Human-Human Fruit

Tony Tony Chopper is definitely one of the best One Piece characters of all time, with more crazy Devil Fruit transformations than a lot of the superpowered heroes and villains in the anime and manga. A small reindeer, Chopper’s use of the Human-Human Fruit turns him into a human-reindeer hybrid of epic proportions. Chopper’s hybrid mode has various different levels.

Having consumed the Hito Hito no Mi, the “Cotton Candy Lover” is destined to become a superpowered Doctor for the Straw Hat Pirates. A compelling prospect, the crew of One Piece has already confirmed Chopper’s inclusion. When Chopper uses his human form, he becomes a normal reindeer due to his innate species. Known as Walk Point, this form gives way to other levels of significantly more credibility in battle, including Heavy Point and Horn Point.

1

Luffy Gear Second

Gum-Gum Fruit

Monkey D. Luffy ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, which allows some intense transformations and powers. These may be hard for One Piece to adapt into live-action, considering the fantastical changes that they cause in Luffy’s body. Luffy levels up bit by bit in the One Piece anime and mangaensuring that the live-action show will be keeping things interesting, and won’t be able to settle.

Luffy’s Gear Fifth will present a major obstacle for the show, as Luffy’s hair becomes a cloud-like substance and he manipulates his surroundings. However, even Luffy’s Gear Second will be fascinating and will appear much sooner on the Netflix show. Enhancing Luffy’s speed and mobility in One PieceLuffy’s Gear Second involves increasing blood flow to his limbs, which are seen to bulge as they receive more nutrients and oxygen.

Based on the popular manga/anime series, One Piece is a live-action Netflix adaptation of the story from Eiichiro Oda. The show follows the exploits of a band of pirates, the Straw Hats, led by the energetic and adventure-loving Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy is a young man cursed with strange powers after accidentally eating a mysterious fruit. With his friends Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, Luffy will head across the vast ocean to find the legendary treasure, the One Piece.
