Before this flashback, the family photo was partially blocked, completely covering Van Hohenheim’s face. Many fans speculated that he was smiling, enjoying time spent with his family, or wearing a sneer. However, seeing that he was crying in the photo shows his humanity and his desire to remain with his family. That moment with Trisha was something Ed and Al were too young to remember, and it happened to be one of the final moments the Elric family was whole.

He even agrees that Winry has every right to shoot, but that once she does, she will be seen as an enemy. Before this gets out of hand, Ed throws himself in front of Winry, blocking her from Scar.

In a tearful moment, Winry asks why she couldn’t get revenge on behalf of her parents, prompting Ed to gently take the gun away from her and telling her that she is was not made to take life, but to give it. The episode ends with Winry crying in Ed’s arms, leaving fans emotional after the heavy scene. Just like her parents, Winry never took a life and saved some on her own. She is often seen as a character with sharp humor and a positive personality, making the scenes where she breaks down even harder to watch.

Although this scene happens quickly, the implication below makes for a sad story. Bido’s family was murdered in the attack on the Devil’s Nest, and he was left alone in a world that hated and feared the Chimeras. When he comes across Greed, there is a brief moment where he is brought to tears, thinking he found part of his family, only to be killed by him. Shortly afterwards, Greed is bombarded by memories and screams of sadness and guilt for what he did, but in the end, it is too late to change anything for either of them.

He started a civil war by killing a child, murdered Hughes in cold blood, and despised everyone else while taking pride in the number of deaths caused by his hands. Yet at the moment of his death, as he wept, tore out and destroyed his own philosopher’s stone, it is difficult not to feel a pang of sympathy for him.

During Envy’s final moments, Edward finally sees through him, realizing Envy’s deeper truth, their jealousy of humans and their compassion for each other. Humans have friends and family who pick themselves up when they fall, something Envy never had. Although Envy may not have been redeemed, in the end, he died with nothing, knowing full well that nothing was all he ever had.

After Edward is trapped in the rubble without his automail, Alphonse makes the decision to exchange himself for Edward’s arm. Shou Tucker, her father, in a desperate attempt to maintain his State Alchemist License, decided to fuse Nina with his dog Alexander to create a talking chimera. This brutal act highlights the depth of Tucker’s corruption and the suffering he caused his own daughter. When Edward realizes what he has done, his amazement turns into immediate horror. At that moment, Ed puts the pieces together and it is revealed that Shou Tucker was using humans for his experiments, starting with his wife.

The scene was made even more difficult to watch because Tucker justified his actions and showed no remorse for his actions. In the end, Tucker was killed by Scar’s hands, and when Nina approached her father, calling him with tears in her eyes, Scar also took her life. It was clear that although Nina might not be as conscious as she once was, she still had an understanding of people and events happening around you.
