10 Key MCU Scenes That Make No Sense

There are many scenes in the story of Marvel Cinematic Universe that have come to have very little meaning and make no sense at all. The magic of developing a huge shared cinematic universe like the MCU is that plots and scenes can pay off years later, but there have been several scenes in the MCU that haven’t received this treatment. Some scenes were worthless and made no sense to the overall narrative story even at their original release times.

While it’s still possible that some of these loose ends will be addressed in upcoming MCU projects, it’s more likely that some of these scenes will be completely forgotten and followed through. This means that moments of projects such as Thor, Captain America: Civil War, The Avengers and Doctor Strangeamong others, which seemed important at the time will never be explained in the MCU. While Marvel Studios has done a good job of tying up many of the MCU’s other loose ends, it appears that not everything presented to the franchise will have an answer.

Loki shows interest in the Tesseract through Erik Selvig

Thor (2011)

At the end of 2011 ThorErik Selvig meets Nick Fury, the then Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility, establishing his involvement in the 2012 film. The Avengers. Fury showed Selvig the Tesseract, but the pensive Loki appeared in a mirrored reflection of Selvig noting that the Tesseract was “It’s worth a look,” a sentiment that Selvig himself echoed. This seemed to suggest that Selvig was already somehow under Loki’s control, when this turn of events wouldn’t actually begin until the opening of the The Avengers.

This moment at the very end of Thor was never mentioned again in the MCU and was quickly scrapped just a year later Thor release. Loki was seen taking control of Selvig’s mind using his scepter in The Avengersand how these two characters didn’t cross paths in Thor before Loki fell through a portal and seemingly died, there was no opportunity for Loki to take control of Selvig before The Avengers. It was probably just a mistake by Marvel Studiosbut it’s still a pointless scene in the history of the MCU.

Lady Sif and Volstagg give the collector an Infinity Stone

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Thor: The Dark World the mid-credits scene provided a connection for Marvel Studios to introduce Guardians of the Galaxy the following year, as this scene introduced Benicio Del Toro as Taneleer Tivan, aka the Collector. Lady Sif and Volstagg of the Warriors Three gave the Collector the Aether, the liquid version of the Reality Stone, to keep it safe in his collection. However, this scene made little sense. Most notably, there is no way the Asgardians would trust the Collector with an Infinity Stone, especially in a lawless place like Knowhere.

This scene meant that the Guardians of the Galaxy had a reason to go to Knowhere in Avengers: Infinity Warwhile Thanos went there in search of the Reality Stone. However, this scene also seemed to imply that the Collector himself would collect all the Infinity Stones, which was completely forgotten at the time of Guardians of the Galaxy launch in 2014. It would have made more sense for Lady Sif and Volstagg to entrust the Reality Stone to someone elseor keep it in Asgard alongside the Tesseract.

Spider-Man’s wrist technology never appeared again

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

The 2016 post-credits scene Captain America: Civil War caught up with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, setting the stage for his MCU solo debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This scene continued to expand with Tony Stark’s technological upgrades to Spider-Man’s superhero costume, introducing a series of devices connected to the wall-crawler’s wrist-worn web shooters. This was an exciting addition to Spider-Man’s arsenal, but Return home did not mention this moment, rendering Civil War Completely pointless post-credits scene.

These new gadgets perhaps referred to the 576 web shooter combinations that Karen mentions in Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, the introduction of the “Training Wheels” program means that Peter Parker did not have access to these combinations before Return homeso he wouldn’t be able to see these gadgets in Captain America: Civil War post-credits scene. This scene may have been pointless, but it was great to see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker grow and develop his abilities since his 2016 debut.

Hank Pym has a tank on the keys

Ant-Man (2015)

The science of the Pym particle and Ant-Man’s suit has always been a hot topic of discussion in the MCU and has never been adequately explained. While much of this was left to artistic and creative license alone, there’s no escaping some of the obvious moments that don’t make sense in regards to the Pym Particle. Most notably, 2015 Ant-Man I saw Hank Pym reveal that he keeps a miniaturized military tank on his keychain, but that shouldn’t be possibleas it was previously revealed that miniaturized objects retain their mass.

Hank Pym does not have superhuman strength, as far as the MCU has revealed, so there is absolutely no way he would be able to carry an object as heavy as a tank in his pocket. This is simply incomprehensible, so this is perhaps the most glaring break from Ant-Man’s own loose scientific explanation. It seems unlikely that Marvel will actually try to explain precisely how Pym Particles are usedespecially since these rules have been broken many times since Ant-Man debuted in 2015.

Iron Man talks to Thaddeus Ross about the Avengers

The Incredible Hulk (2008)

2008 The Incredible Hulk has been something of an exception in the MCU, as it stars Edward Norton as Bruce Banner’s Hulk rather than Mark Ruffalo, and characters like General Ross and Emil Blonsky’s Abomination have been completely reimagined in the years since. This may also have discounted The Incredible Hulk post-credits scene, which went out of its way to establish the MCU’s shared universe early on. Tony Stark approached the late William Hurt’s General Ross in a bar for the next Avengers team tease.

At the end of The Incredible HulkBruce Banner was on the run again, while General Ross was drowning his sorrows, ready to be met by Tony Stark. Ross had no idea where the Hulk was, so It appeared that Stark hoped to recruit the Abomination into the Avengers, which would have been catastrophic. This confusing scene was later explained in the Marvel movie The Consultant One-Shot, with Jasper Sitwell and Phil Coulson sending Stark to find Ross so he refused to help, but that scene was still out of place and confusing in 2008.

Thanos wants to court death

The Avengers (2012)

Thanos wants to court death in The Avengers

Although he would become the most significant and powerful villain of the MCU’s Infinity Saga, Thanos made his first appearance in the MCU in the 2012 post-credits scene. The Avengers. This caused him to be warned by his follower, the Other, who noted that threatening the Avengers is “death court”. This hinted at the Marvel Comics story of Thanos, in which he forms a romantic obsession with Lady Death, the personification of the end of life, but this story was not followed up in the live-action MCU.with Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones to solve overpopulation instead of courting Death.

Marvel Television Agatha all the time the series finally introduced Aubrey Plaza to the MCU as Death, so it’s possible that the story of Thanos’ Infinity Saga could be retold, but that seems unlikely. If that doesn’t happen, Thanos will court Death in The Avengers it won’t make any sense. It would be great to see Josh Brolin return as Thanos, especially now that Death exists in the MCU and now has no ties to Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness.who became a ghost after sacrificing himself to Death in Agatha all the time final episodes.

4

Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter kiss

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Most of these MCU scenes don’t make sense, but they can be easily forgotten and pushed aside. However, Captain America: Civil War delivered one of the most controversial and cringe-worthy Steve Rogers scenes in MCU history, one that cannot be easily ignored. Steve Rogers kissing Sharon Carter came out of nowhere, made no sense to the story and was completely pointless and unnecessaryboiling down to nothing more than Rogers getting a love interest. It would have been better if Marvel hadn’t given this honor to the niece of Rogers’ long-lost love, Peggy Carter.

Sharon Carter’s MCU storyline went to a strange place as she was revealed to be the Power Broker in 2021 The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. It would be great to see her dead or given a more substantive heroine role in the future of the MCU, perhaps redeeming herself from this awkward moment in time. Captain America: Civil Wardeveloping her as a character far removed from Steve Rogers’ Captain America. It was always weird that Sharon Carter started a romance with her aunt’s true love, so the MCU might as well ignore it and move on..

3

Baron Mordo thinks there are too many sorcerers

Doctor Strange (2016)

The end of 2016 Doctor Strange set up the perfect villain and plot for a sequel, but 2022 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness completely ignored this setting. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Karl Mordo stole Jonathan Pangborn’s magic at the end of the Phase 3 film, leaving him paralyzed once again and beginning his war against sorcerers in the MCU, suggesting there are simply too many of them. It seemed like Mordo would continue his eradication of sorcerers in subsequent MCU projects, but this version of the character hasn’t been seen since..

This story was planned to end abruptly in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessas Mordo was revealed to have been killed by Scarlet Witch. This would perhaps have been explained by him tracking her in an attempt to steal her power and rid the world of yet another sorcerer, but Wanda Maximoff was too powerful. This scene was cut, however, leaving Earth-616’s Mordo’s fate uncertain and raising more questions about his seemingly non-existent war against the MCU’s magic users.

2

Doctor Strange develops a third eye

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

While Doctor Strange contributed to one of the MCU’s biggest loose ends, the 2022 sequel followed that theme. At the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessDoctor Strange fixes his broken watch and leaves to continue his simple life, but is distracted by a blinding headache which turns into Doctor Strange mysteriously acquiring a third eye, reminiscent of the one displayed by his variant Sinister Strange. This came out of nowhere and wasn’t explained, leaving audiences confused and curious about what the future could hold for Strange..

This scene could have been forgiven if the consequences of Strange acquiring a third eye had been explored. Unfortunately, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ the mid-credits scene saw Strange completely acclimated to his new asset and having full control over when and if he would appearas he shows Clea when she approaches him for help in stopping a raid. This made no sense and made the previous scene even more confusing, but hopefully the next Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange 3 will answer some of these questions.

1

Thanos will do it alone

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Age of Ultron

While Thanos’ debut scene in The Avengers was somewhat out of place, his return in the 2015 post-credits scene Avengers: Age of Ultron it was also confusing and nonsensical. After the Avengers defeated Ultron and recruited people like Vision, Scarlet Witch, Rhodey, and Falcon into their ranks, the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron I saw Thanos don an Infinity Gauntlet and suggest that he track down the Infinity Stones himself. However, this made absolutely no sense, especially since the Infinity Gauntlet had not yet been forged.

Avengers: Infinity War revealed that Thanos forced the Dwarves of Nidavellir to forge the Infinity Gauntlet shortly before their mission began. Thanos also later did not “do it [himself]”, instead sending the Black Order to acquire the Infinity Stones for him. Avengers: Age of Ultron could want to mark the next big development in Thanos’ story in the Marvel Cinematic Universebut it may have ended up delaying the story’s progression, as it introduced a confusing element that didn’t make sense and that Marvel would have been better off avoiding.
