The Other Side Somehow Makes a Baby's Impending Destruction Hilarious

A baby about to be eaten by ants on the Far Side.

A colony of ants is carrying a human baby toward the anthill, but the ant leader yells at the drones, telling them that the baby won't fit in the hole, making their efforts futile. Meanwhile, the baby is blissfully unaware of what is about to happen to him, staring off into space with a small smile on his face. The entire scene is downright hilarious, even considering the horrific implications.

The ants obviously intended to eat the baby, which is indescribable to say the least. Happily, the ants were thwarted by the baby's size, meaning the baby's life was spared, and they didn't even know their life was in danger to start. This is the height of dark comedy as it somehow makes the impending destruction of a baby hilarious.

The Other Side Takes a Horrible U-turn on 'Fair Trade'

A chicken stealing the farmer's baby in The Far Side.

When a woman is returning home from the chicken coop with a basket of eggs in her hands, she notices a hen returning to the chicken coop with her child in her hands. It seems the chickens got tired of the woman continually stealing their eggs, so they decided to get the 'human equivalent' - being the woman's son. While eggs aren't quite the same thing as a fully developed child, it seems like chickens have considered fair trade, which is honestly horrible.

It's as if chickens don't know the difference between a fertilized egg and an unfertilized one. So every egg they lay, they see as a little chick, which in itself is incredibly tragic. Of course, the entire scene is completely absurd, making this tragic moment quite hysterical.

1 Far Side Snake Suffers The Hilarious Consequences Of His Horrible Actions

A snake trapped in a playpen after eating a baby in The Far Side.

After a snake enters a baby's room, it eats the child while the child plays in the playpen. Consequently, When the snake tries to escape, it cannot get through the bars of the playpen because the baby inside prevents the snake from getting out.. The snake had a big meal, but because of it, its belly became the same size as the baby the playpen was designed to keep contained, forcing the snake to suffer the hilarious consequences of its horrific actions.

Although the baby's death is sad, at least the snake will certainly pay for what he did. As it is trapped in the playpen, the child's parents will find the snake there and will certainly kill it immediately. Fortunately, the snake enjoyed that meal, because it was definitely his last.

The other side turns newborns into alligator snacks

Nurses shooing a baby-eating crocodile away from the nursery in The Far Side.

Two nurses are shooing a crocodile out of the hospital nursery, as casually as if they were shooing it out of an empty parking lot, before one nurse turns to another and tells her to count the babies in case the alligator eats one or two of them. Although most of the babies are safe in their cribs, one of them is empty, implying that the alligator has turned at least one newborn into a snack — and it almost doesn't seem like the nurses care.

The whole scene is unquestionably bizarre, like a strange nightmare in which an alligator can eat babies in a hospital and then leave, with the nurses barely paying attention. The Far Side is known for its absurd and strange humor, and this certainly fits that bill.

A baby being fed worms by some birds on the Far Side.

When a mother takes her baby to a local park to read a book while her toddler enjoys some fresh air in the stroller, she certainly wasn't expecting her baby to have a decidedly strange encounter with some local birds. These birds sit perched on the baby's stroller, talking to each other about how they've already fed the baby a ton of worms, but the child still appears to be hungry.

While it's pretty gross to imagine a baby being fed worms by some strange birds, this baby certainly doesn't seem to mind. In truth, as far as the baby is concerned, he is just getting extra food that dayand the smile on the baby's face proves that they are enjoying every minute of this strange bird encounter - so absurd that readers can't help but laugh.

Pilots flying giant babies on the Far Side.

In one of the most visually bizarre Far Side comics, two pilots are sitting on the head of a giant babywith other giant babies flying in the background. The pilots are checking the fuel, lights, and oil pressure before saying a line that makes this whole weird comic suddenly make sense: "Let's get this baby off the ground".

Calling an object "baby"—including, but not limited to, an airplane—is a widely popular figure of speech. It is quite possible for a pilot to say:"Let's get this baby off the ground"to signify that everything seems fine and that they are ready for takeoff, just like the pilot in this comic. The difference, however, is that The Far Side took this figure of speech hilariously literally.

The other side focuses on the wrong thing in this baby joke

Two men looking at a baby in a bottle on the Far Side.

Two men are standing by the fireplace inside one of their houses, and sitting on the mantle (in a truly gruesome fashion) is a baby on a bottle. One of the men is showing it off to his friend like it's a ship in a bottle, bragging that he only paid five dollars for it, and that included the stand.

These two men (or at least the one speaking) are completely focused on the wrong thing here. The question is not how much this baby cost in a bottle, or what accessories came with it, but Why - for the love of all that is holy - is there a baby in a bottle sitting on this man's robe? It's a despicable display, saved only by the black humor that accompanies this strangely sinister Far Side joke.

The other side gives new parents even more reasons to stress

A man using newborns to conduct static electricity in The Far Side.

A man named Reuben is shown sneaking into a daycare center late at night, apparently driving "static electricity experiments". Readers can see this man rubbing the babies on his shirt as one would with a balloon to generate static electricity and then release the babies to stick to the ceiling. While the visuals are funny, the implications are absolutely horrific.

The Far Side makes it clear that Reuben is conducting these experiments without the hospital's permission and that he has no qualms about using newborns to conduct his strange experiments. That's a pretty scary thought for a new parent whose newborn baby is resting in this particular nursery. It makes you think that crazy people like Reuben could be lurking in any daycare center, leaving parents even more stressed (albeit in the most cartoonish way possible).

The Other Side Sheds Light on a Real-World Tragedy

A dingo nursery and farm located next to each other in The Far Side.

In a Far Side comics with morbid title, "Problems in brewing", readers see a daycare center called "Doreen's Nursery"right next to another company called"Ed's Dingo Farm". While this may seem innocent, it's an incredibly dark joke that references a real-world tragedy that happened in the 1980s.

In the case of the death of Azaria Chamberlain, the mother of the deceased baby, Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton famously claimed a dingo ate her baby when she and her then-husband were accused – and ultimately convicted – of murder. However, when Azaria Chamberlain's body was located, authorities discovered that the mother was not lying and that a dingo had actually killed Azaria. It's a moving story that has received a lot of attention over the years, including this Far Side comic.

The Far Side comes up with a hilarious new name for 'Babies'

Two crabs judging babies playing on the beach on the other side.

As two babies play in the sand on the beach, they are watched by two crabs, who are very wary of these little humans. As they watch, pointing out their peculiarities, one of the crabs says to the other: "Yes. ...they are quite strange during the larval stage."Although it's funny to consider that crabs secretly judge people on the beach, that Far Side comic also offers readers a hilarious alternative to 'baby'.

Calling Babies 'Larval Humans' It seems like a bold trend that you would see on Tumblr circa 2012, but it would have started in this Far Side comic, and the thought of it is absolutely hysterical. That's what makes this one of the 10 funniest Far Side comics about babies.
