MCRT investigates a break-in at the home of Radmoore CEO and defense contractor Freddy Martin
Things are not what they seem
The team gets involved in a messy case when a break-in occurs at the home of Radmoore CEO and defense contractor Freddy Martin. When MCRT investigates, they discover that Freddy managed to stop the intruder by fatally shooting him. Things get even more interesting when Freddy’s wife, Melinda, arrives home during the investigation. However, she is not the same woman with whom he shares an intimate moment in the episode’s opening scene.
The team first suspects it to be a robbery, but begins to suspect kidnapping after finding chloroform in the intruder’s items. When Kasie (Diona Reasonover) answers the attacker’s phone, she discovers that Freddy’s wife, Melinda, is actually the intended target of the kidnapping, clearing her of any suspicion of wrongdoing and immediately prioritizing her for a protection team. The team discovers that Melinda can access millions of dollars through her charity, which potentially explains why she is targeted.

Nick Torres and Timothy McGee conduct a separate investigation into Knight’s mysterious jacket with the help of Jimmy Palmer

While the investigation takes place, some agents become involved in a side mission. Determined to determine who Knight spent time with the night of the party, Nick and McGee investigate the leather jacket that Knight initially believes to be his co-worker.. The agents take their effort seriously, taking photos of the coat at the crime scene with a dry cleaning barcode and Tic Tac candy in the pocket.
Perhaps due to negligence, McGee and Torres involve Jimmy Palmer on their mission, despite Jess and Jimmy NCIS season 21 final split. When Palmer uses his dry cleaning contacts to find out who the jacket belongs to, Nick lets it slip that they are using the information to find out more about who Jess was flirting with. Although Jimmy is uncomfortable with the situation, he pretends to be okay with it, further driving the former couple apart.

Knight is tasked with protecting Melinda Martin after a failed kidnapping attempt

After the team discovers that Melinda is the target of the failed kidnapping at her home, they place her in protective custody while they try to uncover the motive behind her attack. Although the women initially got off on the wrong foot at the crime scene, Parker assigns Knight as Melinda’s official protective detail. However, Knight has her work cut out for her, as the philanthropist resists protection.

After her strange reaction at the tennis club, Melinda asks them to make another stop at her house before heading to the hideout. Jess agrees, and when they’re inside Melinda’s house again, Knight presses the philanthropist about his strange reaction to the attacker being from Kansas City. Melinda admits she isn’t being truthful and locks Knight in the Martins’ panic room when it seems like she’s going to reveal everything.
Despite the unfortunate circumstance, MCRT prevails when Tim manages to break into the security of the panic room to free Knight, although it takes a bit of finesse. After she is freed, Knight finds Melinda in a parking lot, but as she follows her, an armed man dressed in black stops her and does not allow her to move forward. Soon, Melinda and Jess are together in the back of a work van, and the former explains to the NCIS agent that she locked her in the house to protect her.

MCRT discovers Melinda Martin’s true identity and her ties to the Kansas City mob

Before they are both kidnapped, Jess snoops around the Martins’ apartment while the owner packs another suitcase. Strangely, Jess finds an old, tarnished ring in Melinda’s jewelry box which contrasts with her elegant jewelry collection. Jess sends a photo of the ring to Kasie, who traces the high school class ring to a source, where she finds a yearbook photo of a young woman named April Day, who looks identical to Melinda Martin.
The MCRT suspects that Melinda is hiding her true identity after discovering that the real Melinda died years earlier, and Karen’s discoveries tie the case together. When Kasie shows Parker a photo of the former valedictorian and homecoming queen standing next to her high school boyfriend, Parker immediately identifies the young man as the deceased son of the Kansas City mob leader. Still, they don’t fully understand Melinda’s connection.

Parker meets Carla Marino
Upon seeing a photo of Melinda and her high school boyfriend, Parker immediately identifies the young man in the photo as Carla Marino’s son. Parker reveals to the team that he has been following Carla for years at the FBI but the criminal managed to avoid it. The finding highlights Parker’s history and makes the supervising agent one of the case’s most important informants.

Meanwhile, as Jess and Melinda fight to escape their captors, Knight asks the philanthropist to tell him why the people who kidnapped her took DNA and blood samples. As Carla tries to flee the scene, Parker reveals that he is connected to the case and takes her in for questioning.

Despite leaving a dangerous loose end with Carla Marino back on the streets, the team considers the case closed and prepares to go their separate ways. As Knight packs his bags for the day, his colleagues report that while they initially believe the jacket belonged to a nerdy actuary named Herman Goldweather, it actually belongs to his cool son. That’s why, Nick and McGee successfully solve the mystery of Knight’s leather jacket.
McGee and Nick tell her that they called the owner of the jacket, and he is on his way to the Navy Yard, which Jess initially rejects. Commenting that she’s too busy to date, Jess stops herself, telling her colleagues to report back to her if the mystery man is cute. The moment reveals in real time that Jess is opening up to the possibility of romance following her split from Jimmy Palmeropening the agent to another love story.
