Monks are one of the most unique classes in Baldur’s Gate 3operating differently from the common weapon wielders or magic users found in Faerûn. Using skills similar to real-world martial arts and specializing in unarmed combat, Monks are fun to play and offer a different experience. These differences can be further enhanced with the right choice of talents to make each flurry of blows count.
Monk gains three feats at levels four, eight, and 12, as do other classes such as barbarians and warlocks at Baldur’s Gate 3. Each monk subclass offers a distinct experience, so it can sometimes be difficult to know which talents are the right choice. With that in mind, these talents offer the best overall perk for any monk, with a mix of utility, combat, and survivability for any game.

Lucky – Gain an advantage and force new moves from the enemy
Spend luck points to double the fortune in the party’s favor
Lucky is a great feat overall and useful in and out of combat. With Lucky, the monk will gain three Luck Points, which can be spent in combat to give themselves an advantage on attack rolls or saving throws. However, Luck Points can also be used to force enemies to reroll their attack rolls and are perfect ways to negate enemy critical hits.
Lucky |
Gain three Luck Points that recharge on a long rest and can be used to gain advantage on attack rolls, ability checks, or saving throws. It can also make enemies reroll their attack rolls. |
---|
But Lucky doesn’t stop there, offering utility outside of combat by spending Luck Points to give you an advantage on skill checks. Lucky is a powerful feat for player characters to accomplishlike Tav, the Dark Urge, or a chosen BG3 Source characters will generally be those who talk to NPCs and interact with the environment. Luck Points recharge on a long rest and work well with any playstyle or subclass.
Lucky is a great talent choice for any player character who doesn’t have high Charisma, as there are many persuasion/deception checks throughout the game.

Hard – Increased hit points
Better resistance for difficult hits
Monks can often be found in the thick of the fight when combat occurs, quickly dealing with enemies and protecting their party members. Because of this, they will inevitably be the target of many scams, and that is where Tough comes in. increases the monk’s maximum hit points by two for each levelwhich doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up quickly at higher levels.
Difficult |
Maximum hit points are increased by two for each level. |
---|
The best part about Tough is that hit points are applied retroactively. For example, performing the talent at level five immediately grants 10 life points. This means that over 12 levels, the monk will gain 24 extra life pointswhich is a great choice for a late-game talent. These extra hit points can be crucial for a class used to fighting enemies hand-to-hand.

Sentry – Attacks with better opportunities
Keep enemies in place with attacks of opportunity
Sentry gives the monk new ways to control the battlefield and protect other party members. With Sentinel: Vengeance, when an enemy within melee range attacks an ally, the monk can use their reaction to make a weapon attack against them. This is great for anyone who uses a multiclass monk build or prefers to use weapons, as this reaction doesn’t work with unarmed attacks.
Sentinel |
Revenge: When an ally is attacked by an enemy within melee range, use a reaction to make a weapon attack against the enemy. Link: Targets hit by attacks of opportunity cannot move for the rest of the turn. Opportunity Advantage: Gain advantage on attacks of opportunity. |
---|
The Sentinel: Snare feature makes any Creatures hit by the monk’s attacks of opportunity can’t move for the rest of the turn. This is a brilliant way to keep enemies in place and prevent them from getting too close to squishier party members. Best of all, Sentinel: Opportunity Advantage will give the monk an advantage over attacks of opportunity to further increase the chances of success.

Martial Adept – More Combat Options
Learn two Battle Master maneuvers
Monks have a fantastic number of skills and resources at their disposal when it comes to overthrowing the Absolute to save the world. However, in a game as complex as BG3It’s always a good idea to have more tricks up your sleeve, and the Martial Adept talent provides this perfectly. With this feat, the monk will be able to learn two maneuvers from the Battle Master fighter subclass and gain a Superiority Die to fuel those abilities.
Martial Adept |
Learn two maneuvers from the Battle Master fighter subclass and gain 1 Superiority Die, which recharges on short and long rests. |
---|
There are 14 maneuvers to choose from, which can offer great battle options. It’s essential check the text of each maneuver, as some specifically say weapon attack, which won’t work for unarmed attacks. Rally, Precision Attack, and Riposte are great options for monks in general and work well with different playstyles and subclasses.

Athlete – Improvement of skills and jumping distance
Easier to support on inclined and improved jumps
Athlete is a fantastic feat for Monks, as it helps them make the most of their increased movement. Being able to maneuver properly in fights is critical for monks, who rely on the ability to get within melee range of enemies for their unarmed attacks. The athlete helps with this by letting the monk use only 1.5 meters/five feet of movement when rising from your stomach.
Athlete |
The Strength or Dexterity ability score increases by 1, to a maximum of 20. Rising from a prone position uses significantly less movement. Jump distance increases by 50%. |
---|
Athletes also allow the monk to increase their Strength or Dexterity ability score by one, with Dexterity being the best option for the class. Finally, the feat increases the monk’s jumping distance by 50%assisting in exploration and pre-positioning on the battlefield. Although the Force determines how far a character can jump BG3Athlete is a great way to increase a monk’s jumping distance.

Mage Slayer – Combat options for dealing with enemy casters
Break concentration and reaction to spell cast in melee
Monks have many tools to help counter enemy spells, such as Stillness of Mind to counteract controlling effects. And with monks typically staying close to their enemies in combat, Mage Slayer is a great feat to help deal with pesky enemy spellcasters. Firstly, the feat gives advantage on saving throws against spells cast against the monk while the caster is within melee range from them.
Mage Slayer |
Advantage on the saving throw: Have advantage on saving throws when a creature casts a spell within melee range. Attack Caster: Use a reaction to attack a caster if they cast a spell within 5 feet. Break concentration: Enemies hit have disadvantage on concentration tests. |
---|
Mage Slayer also allows the monk to use his reaction to attack an enemy caster if he can cast spells within 1.5 meters/five feet of him. Finally, any enemy spellcaster hit by the monk will have disadvantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration. This can devastate enemy casters and allow the monk to quickly and efficiently counter them in combat.
4
Durable – best short rests
Heal yourself fully with short rests
Durable is one of my favorite talents for frontline characters who often take a beating after combat. The talent allows the character increase your Constitution ability score by one up to a maximum of 20. This is great for extra hit points and is best used to change an odd score at character creation to an even score to increase the Constitution modifier.
Durable |
Increase your Constitution score by one, to a maximum of 20. Recover all hit points on a short rest. |
---|
However, Durable’s best feature is its usefulness in taking short rests. With Durable, the monk will Recover all your hit points with a short rest instead of just half. This is a great feat to perform with classes that regain class features or spell slots on a short rest, such as monk, fighter, or warlock. Being able to fully upgrade a character’s capabilities twice between long rests is incredibly useful, especially in areas where going for a long rest isn’t an option.
3
Mobile – Greater speed and movement options
Add even more movement to fast monks
Just like Athlete, Mobile is a fantastic feat to help monks make the most of their mobility abilities in BG3. At level two, monks get a speed boost of three meters/10 feet, then at level six, a speed boost of four and a half meters/15 feet, before a final increase at level 10 of six meters/20 feet. The cell phone will even more increases the monk’s movement speed by three meters/10 feetfor an impressive 16.5 meters/55 feet more movement than any other member of the group.
Mobile |
Increases movement speed by three meters/10 feet. Difficult terrain does not slow down when using the dash. Moving after a melee attack does not provoke an attack of opportunity from that target. |
---|
Mobile also prevents difficult terrain from halving the monk’s speed after taking the dash action, something monks will generally have to wait until level nine to achieve. Finally, after making a melee attack, the monk will be able to move without provoking an attack of opportunityallowing them to roam the battlefield with ease.
2
Alert – Immune to Surprise and Better Initiative
Make sure the monk never misses a turn
Alertness is a fantastic all-around talent that works well for multiple classes. The feat prevents the monk from being surprised by unnoticed enemies, which would prevent them from carrying out actions or reactions in turn. This allows the monk to take control of the battlefield, using his turn to protect other party members who might miss their turn entirely.
Alert |
Plus five for initiative and you can’t be surprised. |
---|
However, The best aspect of Alert is its excellent high-five initiative bonus. Combined with a high Dexterity character, this bonus ensures that the monk will go first, neutralizing any advantage the enemy might have had with a surprise attack. Combining Alert with items such as Elixir of Vigilance
can further increase the monk’s initiative bonus, ensuring that enemies never gain an advantage against the party.
1
Tavern Brawler – Increased unarmed attack damage
Lastly, the Tavern Brawler talent is perhaps the most well-known talent for a monk, and for good reason. The entire edifice is centered around this powerful feat because it works well with the essential aspects of playing a monk. With the Tavern Brawler, When the monk makes an unarmed attack, uses an improvised weapon, or throws something, his Strength modifier is added to the damage and the attack rolls are made twice..
Tavern Fighter |
When making an unarmed attack, throwing something, or using an improvised weapon, the Strength modifier is added twice to the damage and attack rolls. |
---|
Obviously this can lead to some ridiculous damage with Strength-based monks in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, it also works well for Dexterity, as if Dexterity is the highest ability score and is used for the monk’s attacks thanks to Dexterity Attacks, they will still receive the talent’s extra damage bonus. Instead of applying the Strength modifier twice, the bonus would be the Dexterity modifier plus the Strength modifier. Finally, Tavern Brawler also offers a plus-one bonus to Strength or Constitution.
