Amazon My Lady Jane includes several intriguing characters, but some of them stand above the rest. Adapted from the novel by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows, My Lady Jane is a retelling of the true story of Jane Gray, the woman who had a brief reign as the first queen of England. Set in the 16th century, the series charts the titular character's unexpected rise to the throne and the steps she takes to bring unity between Verities and Ethians before being sentenced to death.

Each character in the eight-episode Amazon Prime Video show brings something unique to the story. While the series has many strengths, including adding a touch of fantasy to the story of a British monarch and a compelling plot, My Lady JaneThe characters are what made the series so fascinating. However, it is important to note that although almost all of the characters in My Lady Jane has interesting qualities, some leave a lasting impression.

Lady Margaret Gray

The intriguing aunt

Jane's younger sister, Margaret, is always up to mischief. As the series' prankster, Mary contributed to some of the show's funniest moments. She helps Jane pretend to have the disease on her wedding day and is also fascinated with learning to fight with swords. Gray's youngest daughter doesn't appear much on the show, but whenever she does, she lights up the screen.

Every series needs a diabolical character, and Margaret was the one who appeared My Lady Jane. Margaret is a fascinating character because, for someone young, she is incredibly self-aware and knows exactly what she wants. The fact that she murdered Lord Leicester without a second thought shows that she was willing to do anything for her sisters. She is not only intelligent, but also extremely loyal, something she proves every time she disobeys her mother to help Jane and Katherine.

Susan

The Loyal Servant

As the oldest of the Gray children, Jane did not have a close relationship with her sisters. Her eccentricity meant she didn't make friends easily, but everything changed when she met Susanna, who quickly became her closest confidant. Unbeknownst to Jane, Susanna is an Ethian, something that is revealed when the two run away when Jane discovers she needs to marry Lord Guildford Dudley.

Although Susanna doesn't have a big role My Lady Janehis presence in the series is still memorable. Susanna is important because it shows Jane that there is another world out there that she knows or understands nothing about.. Although hiding her Ethian side wasn't great, Susanna contributed to Jane starting to see her species as human, and not just as beasts that needed to be eradicated from the face of the earth.

Lord Stan Dudley

The ambitious father

Lord Stan Dudley appears as Frances Grey's lover. Stan has an incredible sense of humor that adds light to the show. He is also in love with Lady Frances Gray but she often uses him to obtain information that her father is hiding from her. Despite knowing that Frances doesn't feel exactly the same, Lord Stan still tries to win her over.

It's easy to dismiss Stan as just Lady Frances Grey's lover, but there's more to him than meets the eye. Stan is not only sweet and loyal, but he also loves his family. Every scene in which he appears adds something interesting to the series, even more so because he is funny without wanting to be. Stan and Frances' relationship in My Lady Jane It's one of the best subplots in the series.

Lady Frances Gray

The reluctant mother

Jane's mother, Lady Frances Gray, spends most of the series pursuing her own interests. The Gray matriarch forces Jane to marry Lord Guildford Dudley so that her family won't have to live in poverty. When she discovers that the Guildfords have no money, she arranges for Katherine to marry the despicable Lord Leicester, despite promising Jane that she would not.

She is willing to use anyone to live a luxurious life. Fortunately, Frances grows as a character at the end of the series because she helps Jane and Lord Guildford, proving that somewhere deep down she loves her daughter, even if she doesn't show it.

Lord Dudley

The tragic husband

Guildford's father, Lord Dudley, is one of the most important characters in the My Lady Jane. Lord Dudley knowingly arranges for his son to marry Jane, even though Guildford is an Ethian and has no money. Given the fact that Lord Dudley is actually in debt, he has even more reason for Guildford to not only be Jane's consort but also King of England.

My Lady Jane there's certainly no shortage of ambitious characters, but Lord Dudley truly stands above the rest. What makes Lord Dudley stand out is that he is a multifaceted character. He plays a pivotal role in making Jane queen, thus placing his son in a position of power. Like Lady Frances, Lord Dudley makes no apologies for what he is willing to do for influence. Although he is mostly known for his cunning ways, Lord Dudley has a soft spot for his children and wants the best for them, despite going about it the wrong way.

Princess Mary

The future queen

Portrayed by Kate O'Flynn, Mary is the main villain of the series. As the eldest of King Henry's children, Mary was the one who should be the ruler of England. However, his half-brother, Edward, was the one who ended up becoming king. For most of the series, Mary invents diabolical ways to murder Edward, but always fails. When Jane is crowned queen, Mary is justifiably upset and continues her plan to usurp the throne.

Mary's plot to kill her brother is obviously inexcusable, but it's also easy to see where she's coming from.. As the eldest, she was supposed to rule England, but was passed over because she was a woman. The fact that she fights for her rights, even in a frantic way, is what makes her one of the most intriguing characters. Her ambition is truly admirable, even more so because she was fighting for herself at a time when women were expected to keep quiet and accept the role that men chose for them.

King Edward VI

The Child King

Jane's cousin and confidant, Edward, is one of the sweetest characters in My Lady Jane. The ailing king ascended the throne at the tender age of nine and had to rule a kingdom plagued by division. Unbeknownst to him, Edward was being poisoned by Mary and Lord Seymour. As he thought he was dying, Lord Dudley convinced him to make Jane his heir so that his son would one day be king. Since My Lady Jane was cancelled, whether Edward resumed his rule is still a mystery.

Initially, Edward seems like a pushover, but he can defend himself when the situation calls for it. For example, when he discovered that his sister was trying to kill him, Edward did not run and hide, but sought to find evidence that would prove that she was behind his unusual illness. Although for most of the series he does nothing to stop the massacre of the Ethianians, his interactions with Petunia and Fitz help him see the error of his ways.

Mr Seymour

The Mighty Protector

A member of King Edward VI's court, Lord Seymour is one of the antagonists in My Lady Jane. Seymour is in love with Edward's half-sister Mary and helps her plan how she could usurp the throne and become Queen of England. He is incredibly devoted to his lover and does everything she asks without question. Seymour tries and fails several times to murder Edward, but this does not diminish his enthusiasm for helping Mary achieve her dream.

The main reason Lord Seymour stands out is that he is a typical villain whose mistakes contribute to what makes the series so funny. His never-give-up attitude and puppy love are some of the things that make My Lady Jane so fun. Although Seymour considers himself an intelligent man, the number of times he fails to execute his plans properly says otherwise. Like Mary, Seymour is cruel and cunning and will use anyone to get what he wants, but all of these characteristics make him a compelling character.

Lord Guildford Dudley

The condemned husband

Lord Guildford Dudley is Jane's main love interest and her husband in the series. Guildford, who is actually an Ethian, is forced to marry Jane by her ambitious father. Unlike other Ethians, Guildford is not able to transform at will. Every day, at sunrise, he turns into a horse and only becomes a man when the sun sets. He marries Jane in the hope that she can cure his ethianism, but discovers that such a thing is not possible.

Guildford is an amazing character because of his bad boy personality and devotion to Jane. He does a great job being the tortured hero the audience roots for. Although Guildford is known for his charm, he is a much deeper character. He struggles with his past and has difficulty accepting his ethnicism, but eventually comes to love all parts of himself.

The Queen of Nine Days

Portrayed by Emily Bader, Lady Jane Gray is the protagonist of My Lady Jane. Of all the characters in the series, Lady Jane probably has the most interesting storyline because of the way her story unfolds. She stops hating marriage and marries an Ethian, falling in love with him and later becoming the first queen of England. The series does an incredible job of showing how much Jane changes as her life takes an unexpected turn.

What makes Jane stand out from all the characters in the series are her feminist views and her refusal to accept the status quo. As England's first queen, Jane did not do what was expected of her, but instead did what she believed was right, defending the Ethians because they were being marginalized in her kingdom. Her kind heart, resourcefulness, smart mouth, and intelligence are what make her such a compelling character. The fact that she isn't a queen at the end of the season My Lady Jane It's a shame because England could have benefited from having a leader like her.
