BJ Vines Hires Colton Wolf in Dark Air
The Audience Didn't See This Twist Coming
In a twisted ending that is hard to recover from, Dark Spirits the season 2 finale revealed that Wolf wasn't acting alone or driven by madness. Instead, it was the aforementioned BJ Vines who had hired him to blow up the rig, kill the dying Emerson, and later kill Emerson's son.
As the owner of a mining site, Vines discovered that there was untapped uranium beneath the site and paid Colton to bomb it so that its value would drop, and he could buy the land to steal it. In the process, Vines inadvertently killed several employees including Joe's son. When Emerson felt guilty about this, Vines again hired Colton to kill him.
Why did Colton Kill Emerson and His Sons?
He was hired to kill them
Emerson worked with Vines. When she received a terminal cancer diagnosis, she decided to come out about the bombings. His son stole a lock box containing a survey of the area that revealed the area's uranium, so Vines hired Colton to kill them both. Colton succeeded in killing Emerson and one of his sons, but kept the lockbox that contained the survey.
This lockbox also contained Joe's son's belt buckle and, when Joe caught Colton, he made the connection between the bombings. Finally the best western movies should, Vines faced Colton before Leaphorn faced Vines.
Why Vines Killed Colton Wolf (Not Joe)
Vines Had to Tie Up Loose Ends
A lot Dark Spirits season 2, it seemed that Leaphorn would end up killing Colton. However, Colton was instead shot dead by BJ Vines to tie the knot.
In a very cruel twist, Vines gave the thug enough money to start a new life before sending him on his way, thus lulling Colton into a false sense of security. When Colton turned away, Vines shot him dead. This was the moment when Colton, as he lay dying, called out his mother's name. Vines seemed to confirm his success, with the living link between him and the bombings now dead.
The Explanation Behind Joe Turning a Belt Buckle into a Feather
It is a sign of welcome
Joe finally made peace with his son's death and was able to move on.
Although Leaphorn knew the law wouldn't help him, he was still able to take Vines down on his own. So, Leaphorn kidnapped an oil executive and left him for dead, ensuring that justice was served.
This indirectly led Bernadette Manuelito to leave the national police to pursue a job in the Border Guard as she thought that Vines had skipped town and thus escaped justice. Although Leafnorn did not tell Manuelito of the villain's true fate, he did leave him a parting gift. This gift of an iron feather was very important symbolically to both characters.
Joe melted down his late son's belt buckle and made a metal feather as a gift for Bernadette. This meant that Joe was finally at peace with his son's death and was able to move on, and it proved that Joe saw himself as a father figure to young, naïve Bernadette. By letting go of the belt buckle after killing Vines, Joe accepted that his son was not coming back.
By giving a feather to Bernadette, the antihero of Dark Spirits season 2 proved that she can still be a parent despite the trials she faced during her difficult life.
How Dark Spirits Season 2 Finale Was Received
Our Fate Was Separation
However Dark Spirits season 2 was generally well-received by fans and critics (it has a 100% rating on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes), The events of the season finale themselves were divisive. That is because they deviate from the book from which the story is inspired. There was also the feeling that Colton being killed off so early was a disappointment.
The consensus among fans and critics alike is that season 2 is over Dark Spirits it was a satisfying ending despite that. In Reddit thread we discuss the events of fate, many fans agreed that the episode was actually “felt like a series finale.” Speculation has been going around since the show was in production before the writers and cast stormed that setting up season 2 as the series finale was only possible if the show didn't return for a third season. Dark Spirits it was renewed for season 3 though.
For some fans, whether Vines can survive his time in the desert is a lingering question ahead of season 3. According to executive producer Chris Eyre, the decision to leave Vines alive in the desert was not originally in the script (via TV line). Instead, the idea was that he should be shot and killed. Actor Zahn McClarnon is the one who pressured his character to leave Vines in the element. He explained:
Zahn was very smart when he said, 'Well, Leaphorn wouldn't do that.' He couldn't pull the trigger. So, Zahn saved us from us, or at least he saved me from me. It was written that Leaphorn took revenge, but he is the moral compass in the story – uncle, father, grandfather you want, and it was right that he did not want.
So, the audience has the characters as much as the writers to thank for the happy ending Dark Spirits season 2 and the endless questions about what's next.
