Hernandez grew up in Bristol, Connecticut, where he quickly emerged as a sports star. He would go on to play football at the University of Florida, where he would help the Gators win the BCS National Championship alongside Tim Tebow and head coach Urban Meyer. Hernandez was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft and played there for three seasons. Hernandez played in Super Bowl XLVI against the New York Giants alongside NFL legends Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski before being released from the Patriots in 2013 after being arrested and convicted of murder.

Based on the first manslaughter charge Hernandez received in 2015, the jury concluded that Hernandez killed Odin Lloyd on June 17, 2013, two months before the Patriots offered him a five-year, $40 million contract. Lloyd was the boyfriend of Shaneah Jenkins, the sister of Shayanna Jenkins, the girlfriend of Aaron Hernandez and the mother of his child. Lloyd's body was found in an isolated industrial estate in North Attleborough, Massachusettsnot far from the wealthy community where Hernandez lived in a mansion. Lloyd was brutally murdered and shot six times.
The motive for the crime was unknown at the time of the murder trial and remains unclear until today. There is speculation that Hernandez killed Lloyd after Lloyd found out that Hernandez was gay. Hernandez has never publicly commented on her sexuality, but several people close to her, including a male childhood friend and former teammate, have said they had sex with Hernandez. Two of Hernandez's friends, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace, were with Hernandez and witnessed the murder. They were charged with complicity in Lloyd's murder and sentenced to 4.5-7 years in prison.

Hernandez's lawyer surprisingly admitted that his defendant was at the scene and said Aaron was a helpless witness to Lloyd's murder, blaming Ortiz and Wallace.

Five days after a jury found him not guilty in the 2012 double murder of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, Hernandez was found dead in his cell by a corrections officer. Hernandez hanged herself from the bed sheets and was pronounced dead at 4:07 AM at Mass Memorial Hospital in Leominster, MA. He had been heavily smoking the synthetic marijuana known as K2 in the days leading up to his death. Hernandez did not leave a suicide note but wrote “John 3:16” referring to the Bible verse on his forehead.his former Gators teammate Tim Tebow used to write about his black eye during football games. Hernandez became more religious during his time in prison.

Due to an old Massachusetts legal system known as a recusal, Hernandez's murder case was dismissed on May 9, 2017, because he died while his case was pending due to his appeal. While this law may seem to have little or no impact on Hernandez, it greatly affects the people closest to the victim(s) and can prevent them from seeking compensation. In 2019, Aaron Hernandez's conviction for the murder of Odin Lloyd was overturned by the Massachusetts Supreme Court, ending the old law known as “initial removal” or reduction. The Lloyd family released a statement that read, “This decision greatly helped the family to find closure on the terrible loss of their beloved Odin. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a devoted member of her family and community.” Hernandez's case and others will be considered in it American Sports Story.
