McAvoy appreciated the challenges he faced in joining Separate shortly before production began, while I admit that last-minute entry also had its advantages. He also explained how he started going around playing 23 different personas for his character. Read McAvoy's comments below:
He is an amazing player. I think you will give a very different performance from what I did. Sometimes, arriving at the last minute is the best option. I think he quit two weeks before they started shooting. It was really last minute. The script was well put together, so it was pretty clear what I actually wanted to do right away. There were a few characters that took a long time to find. Patricia came very quickly, Dennis came very quickly, Hedwig took a while.
I hadn't even found some characters yet and it just happened so quickly, and then Night actually said to me, “I want you to give Hedwig a speech impediment,” and I was like, “What, at the last minute you want me to just go?” and he was like, “Yeah, we need to try something.” So we did it at the reading and after one scene of doing it, it was like, “It's done!”
