As peppy and upbeat as My Hero High School compared to other popular shonen series, pulls no punches when it comes to character backstories. The world in the series is not perfect and heroes and villains alike have suffered. Many of the characters had horribly difficult childhoods, suffering abuse, neglect, and judgment from society because of their Quirks.
Learning about characters' backstories can give fans a better understanding of their motivations and what made them choose to be a hero or villain. Others My Hero High School characters had a happy and encouraging start, but sadly others were not so lucky. Whether it's good or bad, the series has some things some of the most well-written, detailed, and emotional backstories ever seen in anime.

Deku was an amazing hero, though his childhood was full of obstacles. He was born Quirkless, so his chances of ever attending his dream school, UA High School, and becoming like his idol, Omnipotence, seem slim to none. Izuku watched All Power videos for hours, tearfully asking his mother if he would ever be able to be like the man he watched, despite his lack of a Quirk.
Izuku faced constant bullying from his classmate Bakugo, who insulted him endlessly. A miracle came when All Angase transferred his One For All Quirk to Deku, but without this blessing, he may never have been a great warrior. His sad circumstances changed, but his youth was an emotional struggle.

Shuichi Iguchi, nicknamed Spinner, is a member of the League of Villains with a devastating backstory. She was constantly bullied because of her appearancelike a conspiracy, and as such, it did not have many friends. When he stumbled upon the League of Villains, he felt he had found a team that could overcome his reptilian appearance.
Spinner is truly evil, but in his own twisted way, he wanted to improve the world. Spinner created the Hero Killer Stain image and fought tirelessly against the League of Villains because he thought he could make the world a better place. Although his ways were wrong, and he actually did more harm than good, his life as an outcast played a part in driving him to join a corrupt organization.

Hated Heroes For Years, But Changed His View After Deku Saved Him From The Same Hand
Kota Izumi made it clear to Deku that he despised warriors when he first met him, for an annoying reason. His parents were very successful Pro Heroes, working as a duo called the Water Hose, but they both died trying to take down Muscular, the same villain who later attacked Deku and Kota. As a way of life, Kota started hating all the heroes because he suspected this work by taking his parents from him.
Kota arrived just as he was saved from Muscular by Deku, changing his perspective completely. He saw the true value of brave warriors willing to risk their lives to save others. Although what happened to his parents was a tragedy, Kota changed his opinion of heroes from hatred to appreciation and respect.

Hawks live a sad, lonely life for most of his life, until the Pro Hero, Endeavor, arrested his father. He always admired heroes from afar, but as he grew up, Hawk became a talented Pro Hero. Her story is sad, but inspiring, as she works hard to overcome her circumstances and prevent others from suffering the way she did.

Eri's Quirk, Rewind, was in high demand as it could erase people's Quirks. Unfortunately, the precious skill was exploited by the villainous organization, Shie Hassaikai. Overhaul, the leader of the organization, used Eri's abilities to his advantage by creating bullets from her body. To make matters worse, Eri's parents abandoned her.
When Eri's Quirk malfunctioned and killed her father, her mother abandoned her. Orphaned, Eri's grandmother, a Yakuza boss, adopted her and allowed the Shie Hassaikai and Overhaul to use her Quirk as they pleased. The heroes eventually save Eri and introduce her to normal life at UA, but the effects of the trauma he was dealing with did not go away easily.

Toya Todoroki, also known as Dabi, was there another unfortunate victim of Pro Hero, Endeavor. While Endeavor treated everyone in the family badly, he ignored Toya, spending all his time training Shoto. Dabi's Quirk, Blueflame, is awesome, but it still wasn't enough to make Endeavor happy.
Dabi's grief at being neglected by Endeavor reached a critical point one day, too he almost accidentally burned himself to death with Blueflame. Although he survived, he was left permanently disabled, explaining his rudimentary and scarred appearance. Filled with rage, he sympathized with the Hero Killer Stain's views on society, so he joined the Society, cementing his position as a villain.

All For One used Shigaraki to do his will and become his evil henchman. No one was there to save Shigaraki except All For Oneso he hated heroes all his life for abandoning him when he needed them the most. Although he is a criminal who has caused great harm to others, Tomura's story is full of trauma and sorrow.
